Defund public libraries

Missouri House Republicans vote to defund libraries

Missouri House Republicans voted to defund all of the state’s public libraries, in a proposed $45.6 billion state budget that will soon move to a vote in the GOP-controlled state Senate.

The Missouri House debated for over eight hours last Tuesday on a budget that is roughly $2 billion less than the one Gov. Mike Parson (R) proposed last January, cutting not only the $4.5 million Parson had slated for libraries, but also costs for diversity initiatives, childcare and pre-kindergarten programs.

Excellent plan if you want to ensure people of lesser means are barred from information technology. Maybe next they can outright eliminate public education.

I though we were going to bottom out at a neo-Gilded Age, but apparently even THAT is too "good" for America.

You forget Al Gore invented the intertnet? Everything is available right at your fingertips thanks to Al.

Wrong. Questions, questioning things, are signs of intelligence and critical thinking. Tossing insults and ad hominem--like you do--is a sign of lack of intellect.

Misunderstanding a comment, as you just did, is another sign of a weak mind. Stupid questions are anything but "signs of intelligence and critical thinking".

Thank you AI Gore!!!

The voters want government to support libraries (and schools, roads, police.......)

So? Roads and police are within the authority of govt. I'd suggest education isn't. Just because the people want the govt to do something that doesnt mean the govt has the proper authority to do it. They may also have the power to do it but again that's not the same as the authority to do it.

So what do you propose?

But I'm unfair in my assessment of Middle America.

I'm trying to picture a vote to defund the BPL.

Most state constitutions establish (and require) an adequate educational system along with roads and police. The state constitution and laws determine what is within the authority of the government. Also, see the 10th Amendment.

Missouri constitution. Article IX:

"It is hereby declared to be the policy of the state to promote the establishment and development of free public libraries and to accept the obligation of their support by the state and its subdivisions and municipalities in such manner as may be provided by law. When any such subdivision or municipality supports a free library, the general assembly shall grant aid to such public library in such manner and in such amounts as may be provided by law.

And? The feds have no authority to operate a dept of education. Does every state require the govt to pay for libraries. Even if they do why should the govt do it?

The feds and dept of education have nothing to do with local libraries although there is some federal funding for stuff like internet access in rural areas.

Those who included libraries when they wrote the state constitution must have thought they would be a valuable service to the public. Many students do not have internet access which is now required for many school activities and use public libraries for that purpose.

He doesn't understand. He thinks the entire world has unrestricted high speed Internet access.

Do the feds have authority to control immigration? Where do we find that power?
