Could Syria ignite World War 3? That's the terrifying question

  • Syrian conflict could engulf region in struggle between Sunni and Shia
  • Already claimed 93,000 lives and made 1.6million people refugees
  • UK, France and U.S. taken different side to China and Russia

The crisis in Syria may appear to be no more or less than a civil war in a country many people would struggle to place on a map. But it’s much more than that: it is rapidly becoming a sectarian struggle for power that is bleeding across the Middle East, with the potential to engulf the entire region in a deadly power struggle between two bitterly opposed Muslim ideologies, Sunni and Shia. Already, the war inside Syria has resulted in 93,000 dead and 1.6 million refugees, with millions more displaced internally and those figures are escalating rapidly amid reports of appalling atrocities on both sides.

I realise that what some social studies teacher says in Hicksville USA is immensely more important than what is happening in Syria, but I would contend that it may be worth a little attention.

We're always on the brink of world war 3 but, this time, maybe we could sit it out and give some others a chance to play.

Dear Mr Obama,

Please excuse the United Kingdom from war today as she has a very sore knee.

Yours sincerely, Mrs Queen.

I am not advocating intervention, however we may get sucked in nonetheless. This one has got the lot; Russia, China, USA, Israel, UK, Iran, Iraq, Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Lebanon.

You guys aren't in much of a position to really play though.

Well, there is that.

We have kicked so many footballs through the windows of the world that our pocket money simply won't cover the extortionate costs of replacing glass and footballs any longer. Anyway, the dogs in those middle east gardens have bitten us too many times already.

Mmm. I'm going to stop this 'playing children' analogy now, before i run into a catholic priest or a famous personality from 1970s British television.

Why not? They could send that Prince Harry over, he always seems to be spoiling for a fight and looks marvelous in his uniform. And then, there are always Tom's sons...

You could always dig out your Code Pink kit again, the sight of the Pink Blob would give Assad the willies.

That and it's not very funny.

Don't they have a message board in the UK?

Shouldn't you be on that site rallying the red coats instead of worrying about what is happening in our country?

Nobody gives a fuck about what is happening in the UK .. obviously, not even you .. which is why you are here everyday.

I credited you with more intelligence than that BAC, even though you have some barking mad beliefs like 9/11. If you had read what I said then you would know that I don't believe that intervention would do any good. Anyway I thought you would welcome the opportunity to wheel out your video of the fanatical supporters of Ghaddafi and tell us again about the Great Manmade River.

9/11 .. that's funny .. especially when we're arming the terrorist organization that was supposedly responsible for it.

Your history is that of a warmonger .. if I missed something, I apologize.

What do you believe is a good idea with regards to Syria?

Yes you did miss something. I haven't a clue what can be done in Syria it seemingly has its own momentum and pace. Any where Sunni and Shia are facing each other is potentially really dangerous and nightmarish. It is a powder keg that is primed to go off any day now.

And what changed in the last 1,000 years.
