Christians Burning Witches

In a nation where 90% follow this so called religion of peace it is still common.

"They’re going to cook the sanguma mama!”
The shout went up from a posse of children as they raced past the health clinic in a valley deep in the Papua New Guinean highlands. Inside, Swiss-born nurse and nun Sister Gaudentia Meier — 40-something years and a world away from the ordered alps of her homeland — was getting on with her daily routine, patching the wounds and treating the sicknesses of an otherwise woefully neglected population. It was around lunchtime, she recalls.

Sister Gaudentia knew immediately the spectacle the excited children were rushing to see. They were on their way to a witch-burning. There are many names for dark magic in the 850 tongues of Papua New Guinea, sanguma resonating widely in these mountains. The 74-year-old sister hurriedly rounded up some of her staff, loaded them in a car and followed the crowd, with a strong foreboding of what she would find.

Two days earlier she had tried to rescue Angela (not her real name), an accused witch, when she was first seized by a gang of merciless inquisitors looking for someone to blame for the recent deaths of two young men. They had stripped their quarry naked, blindfolded her, berated her with accusations and slashed her with bush knives (machetes). The “dock” for her trial was a rusty length of corrugated roofing, upon which she was displayed trussed and helpless. Photographs taken by a witness on a mobile phone show that the packed, inert public gallery encircling her included several uniformed police.

Oh, look, a thread about violent Christians which Grind has completely ignored! Along with the rest of the board, imagine my surprise! You even referenced to it in the other thread, but people can't be bothered with Crazy Christins, just those evil Muslims.

So Chicky, you discovered an article about a Catholic nun trying to prevent uneducated savages from burning witches, and you're claiming this is an example of murder sanctioned by Christianity?

Man are you a dumbass.

It's an example of a Christian nation where people are regularly burned as witches. It is done in connection with the spiritual beliefs.

“Thou shalt not allow a sorceress to live” (Exodus, 22:18).
“sorcerers amongst you must be put to death” (Leviticus, 20:27). Hey, that's the same book of the bible from which uneducated social conservative savages get their hatred for homosexuals.

The Huffington Post recently wrote a piece on the upsurge of witch hunts in Africa brought on by hardliner Evangelicals:
African Children Denounced As “Witches” By Christian Pastors
…Nwanaokwo Edet was one of an increasing number of children in Africa accused of witchcraft by pastors and then tortured or killed, often by family members. Pastors were involved in half of 200 cases of “witch children” reviewed by the AP, and 13 churches were named in the case files.

…The idea of witchcraft is hardly new, but it has taken on new life recently partly because of a rapid growth in evangelical Christianity. Campaigners against the practice say around 15,000 children have been accused in two of Nigeria’s 36 states over the past decade and around 1,000 have been murdered. In the past month alone, three Nigerian children accused of witchcraft were killed and another three were set on fire.

Nigeria is one of the heartlands of abuse, but hardly the only one: the United Nations Children’s Fund says tens of thousands of children have been targeted throughout Africa.

In a manner reminiscent of the witch hunts in early modern Europe, Papua New Guinea has experienced an increase in “witch” persecutions, and the same phenomenon has been observed in Africa, particularly in Nigeria.

The experience of Nigerian Mary Sudnad, 10, reported by The Guardian, is perhaps typical. Mary’s brother fell ill and died, and the Christian pastor told her mother that his death was caused by Mary’s witchcraft. In response, her mother left her to be beaten by a gang of three ‘vigilantes.’ The following day, after an attempt at exorcism, the mother threw caustic soda in Mary’s face before abandoning her on a field.

Though in Nigeria the persecutions focus on children and in Papua New Guinea on women, the scenario is similar in both countries: the so-called witches are blamed for deaths or diseases in the community, or held responsible for social ills. Sometimes they are considered witches simply because their behavior is unruly or socially unacceptable.

These ‘witches’ are singled out usually by men that wield spiritual power in the community: Christian pastors in Nigeria, or elder tribal councilmen in Papua. The sentence is banishment, torture or death. In Nigeria, it is usually parents or community ‘vigilantes’ that enact the penalties, while in Papua there are organized groups of ‘witch hunters’ whose only purpose is to mete out the punishment.

But its not done in accordance with the teachings of Christ, and The Church actively condones the practices. Exodus and Leviticus are part of the Jewish Torah, and yet here we are discussing Christianity.

You are a slimeball incapable of honest debate.

As the story indicated many pastors were involved.

The old testament is part of the Bible used by Christians and the justification used by hatemongering imbeciles, like you. Never heard of Jewish populations burning witches, but maybe...

Again, the point here is not that all Christians burn witches but that Christian teachings can be used to justify violence and in some cases incites violence.

You are losing this debate which is why you are resorting to calling me names.

Any "pastors" involved with burning witches do so against the teachings of Christ as well as the Catholic Church and any mainstream Christian denomination. The Bible contains the Old Testament because it is historically significant and contains the Scripture that Christ then fulfilled.

You really ought to learn about the Bible before you go on hating on it.

Just noting your usual dishonest tactics. You don't debate. You do nothing but spin.

There are pastors involved with the witch burning and many of the culprits are motivated by religious ideas. Catholics believe in lots of ridiculous nonsense, like demon possession. Your claims that it is a misinterpretation or misapplication of the scripture is nothing but your opinion on the scripture and no different than a Muslim that denounces violence in the name of Islam. It's good for you but it does nothing to counter the fact that some people use violent passages of the bible to incite/justify violence.

The Old Testament is part of the Christian bible. Christians believe the God of the old testament was/is God.

I know the bible better than 99% of American Cathoilics who's ignorance of the bible is a source of frequent jokes.

This is hilarious since your tactic here, citing the actions of those acting against Christ teachings somehow represent Christianity, is completely dishonest. You have provided no legitimate argument to support your contention whatsoever.

Nor is there any relevancy in this discussion about "frequent jokes" by Catholic haters who are ignorant of the Church's teachings. Except of course that it shows your ignorance of the subject.

You state that "The Old Testament is part of the Bible." There is no disagreement there. Yet you failed to address my point which you use that statement to address, and of course it does not. I will simply repeat: "The Bible contains the Old Testament because it is historically significant and contains the Scripture that Christ then fulfilled."

Where did Christ mention witchcraft or sorcery?

The old testament is part of the Christian Bible. It's not relevant to Christians for historical reasons alone but for spiritual ones as well. I did address your point which was nothing more than a lie intended to spin away from the violent passages of the Bible used by Christians to support the persecution of those accused of witchcraft.

He didn't. That's why witchcraft and sorcery are not part of Christianity; they are pagan beliefs.

The OT is spiritually relevant for the reason stated.

The OT isn't just historical to a lot of Christians. It's part of the belief system.

Religions are nuanced, and have a variety of sects & believers. When people here talk about Muslims committing violent acts, they don't break down the nuances; they just state "it's in the Koran."

It's the same with the Bible. And many violent groups throughout history & currently have used the Bible's teachings as justification for their actions.

You claimed they were acting against Christ's teachings. What teachings?

It's pretty clear that you have convenieintly excluded them based on YOUR interpretation of Christ's teachings. One could do the same with Islam. It fails to address the fact that some people use violent passages of the bible to incite/justify violence.

No, you are wrong or rather you are being deceitful. Christians treat the old testament as a source of religious teachings.

Christ taught that there is only one God; that's a bit different than paganism.

For the third and last time, Christians understand the OT as scripture that has been fulfilled.

really?....the article says her attackers were....

"Angela’s accusers — young men from another town, high on potent highlands dope and “steam” (home-brewed hooch) — had come back for her."

the only person the article mentions was a Christian was the nun who tried to stop it......

For the last time the OT is part of the Christian Bible and serves as a source spiritual/moral teaching.

Who said anything about multiple Gods?

90% of the people of Papua New Guinea claim Christianity. There are several incidents of these things happening there and in Nigeria.
