I think that's a gross mischaracterization. I think any objective political observer can determine that going over the fiscal cliff provides far more advantages politically to Democrats than it would to Republicans. That does not mean they are not aware of the short term consequences.

Because, simply stated, Democrats are negotiating from a position of strength. That and, to be honest, there's a good argument to be made that the long term benefits of actually going over the cliff may outweigh the short term disadvantages.
