Americans Are Losing Faith in the Value of College. Whose Fault Is That?

Actually part of the reason tuition is going up is because states SYSTEMATICALLY STARTED TO PONY UP LESS MONEY TO BUDGET THE UNIVERSITIES. Usually, as in my home state, when lottery funds were set up to be the boon for "education" the state seemed to say "Hey! We don't need to give them any money now!" Which leads to funding gaps in universities.

It's not JUST that, but it isn't really just pure greed based on financial aid.

There MAY be some greed in the way the pay committees at those universities choose to lard $$$$ on senior administrators and coaches.

State Lotteries helped fund K-12 education. It was never intended to fund the fat elitists in the Universities. Outrageous tuition funds the 7 digit salaries of professors and administrators.

If these institutions of dubious learning were actually private - that is ZERO public funds, ZERO taxpayer guarantees of loans, then I have no issue with what they pay or charge. But as it is, taxpayers are being raped by institutions with unqualified individuals teaching utterly worthless majors.

19 states have so-called "Lemon Laws" that allow consumers to sue manufactures of shoddy goods. We should have the same for the Universities. If a student graduates with a degree that has no value in employment - they should have the right to sue the institution that conned them into paying hundreds of thousands for a useless degree.

Are you sure you didn't mean to say- too many minorities go to college?

That's OK, we knew what you meant!

Aren't you glad they did away with the SAT's?

Standards are racist. Grades are racist. All should get a degree if they want one. Completing assignments or learning material isn't needed - we all get degrees - and taxpayers fund them.

So you are saying that minorities are being gifted college degrees, while White Students have to actually pass?

And along with that attitude, you are also implying that Minorities with college degrees are not worth their weight in salt?

Ah! The same old racist Republican Ploy- damn the minorities for not having College Degrees- And Damn them if they do have College Degrees?

DO you see how that comes across as RACISM?

Well, let me ask you- Is there anything a minority could ever do to meet your approval?

Next!

People are losing faith in their ability to pay for college.

Public university tuitions should be completely tax revenue funded,
and private schools should just be left the hell alone.

Working class whites who bolted the Democratic Party years ago to join the Klan or whatever the hell it is--

for a while they were tea baggers, now they're MAGAmaniacs, and I can't be bothered to keep track--

don't respect intellectualism or education anyway.

If they were even moderately literate, they wouldn't have fallen off the deep end.

I believe it depends on the state.

. Outrageous tuition funds the 7 digit salaries of professors and administrators.

And while that is not uncommon in elite institutions, especially for high earning research profs, it isn't the norm. Wish it were otherwise.

A lot of people like to talk about "worthless majors" but I don't really know what those are. I know of majors that don't result in high earning jobs but these are still necessary people.

You know a lot of really good English majors wind up in corporate positions and function REALLY WELL. It doesn't matter what your major is, it matters if you know how to learn.

Problem is they weren't conned. The stupid kids chose to get an easy worthless degree in polysci so they could party for 4 years.

Americans Are Losing Faith in the Value of College. Whose Fault Is That?

I think the bigger picture is- Americans are losing Faith in Republicans!

Because, it is clear and concise, the college educated has now shifted over to voting Democratic.

And that is a huge voting bloc and obstacle now for the Republicans to hurdle- AND WHO CAUSED THAT?

The Republicans of course!

They can't get out of their own way!

It's called political suicide!

As the Republicans continue to find hateful ways to divide us, their base keeps getting smaller and smaller!

Hey, I'm just here to tell it like it is- TAKE IT OR LEAVE IT!

Hey, I'm just here to tell it like it is- TAKE IT OR LEAVE IT!

It seemed to me back in the 80's when the GOP was resurgent with the "New Morning in America" and the rise of the Religious Right that the push for GOP candidates became to appear as "down home and folksy" and showing a lack of "sophistication" in order to get votes from that particular demographic that values that. And later it morphed into an overall feigned hatred of "east coast elites" when in fact most of those Republican politicians were the product of elite institutions on the East coast (take Ted Cruz as a prime example).

Ultimately this emboldened a streak in America that finally wound up denigrating education as something a real American would eschew.

But I honestly don't think it's all as simple as pointing political fingers at each other. I think our nation's understanding of how education is NOT A PROFIT GENERATING INDUSTRY has messed us up moreso. Our overall, politically agnostic, lust for MORE MONEY has driven everything we touch to the lowest common denominator intended on fleecing SOMEONE of their money.

The ONLY thing America TRULY believes in, at the end of the day, is the almighty dolla.

And therein lies our failure as a nation.

So you're saying your degree is worthless? It matters if you know how to learn. I would agree. The willingness to learn is essential. It doesn't take a degree to learn, And every workplace is different, you have to adapt.

Correct. What's the mantra of college students? "Will that be on the test?" College are information vomitoriums. Retain the info long enough to vomit it out on the test then refill.

It was my Dad that made me think of money in a whole new way.

As my Dad lay dying in bed, he told me, 'Son, if you have your health, you are already rich"!

He said, "Even if I were the richest man in the world, it wouldn't save me now"!

A degree is NOT worthless. But it shouldn't be considered the ONLY means of getting a job in America. College isn't for everyone, nor should it be. America needs more trade schools.

If you do not have a degree, in many jobs or professions the doors are closed to you.
Some people would go nuts working in an office. They need to find other ways of making a living that are suitable for their temperaments.

For-profit colleges could not pass up the big bucks. Online schools started making a fortune without having the costs of brick-and-mortar schools. They were making terrific money. Universities saw how much profit was in education and they pushed it like a corporation. Push the cost up as high as the traffic will bear. Now Americans take out a college mortgage. It is wrong and hurts American competitiveness.

Colleges don't operate for profit, Nordbutt. They are government institutions.

I like the phrase "college mortgage". Very apropos. Yes it feels like most universities (even online...especially online) have taken the American view that EVERYTHING is better if it becomes a profit-center and they turn it into an industry bent on profit. I honestly don't know why we can't have something untouched in our society that remains somewhat purer. The ideal of the "ivory tower" is not always a bad thing. Universities should be more like abbeys where no one expects them to necessarily turn a major profit but people pursue higher knowledge without restraint.

But that isn't how we operate here in the US and you're right, it will, ultimately, cost us our competitive advantages.

Universities don't turn a profit. They are government agencies.

there are more people who want a white collar job than there are white collar jobs......that is why blue collar skilled jobs like electricians, welders, nurses are sitting empty.......all the college graduates are barristas and landscapers while waiting for their four day, online IT job comes through.....

'White collar' jobs are sitting empty as well. Seems that a lot of people just don't want to work anymore.

Universities are already government institutions. Tuition does NOT cover the cost of the place at all.
