Alabama

:)

That's funny considering that 3 of the 4 NFL teams that made it to the end of the playoffs, Baltimore, Pittsburgh, and Philadelphia all were subsidized in building the stadiums and community anchors and all benefitted from doing so.

That's also funny because nearly half the pro sports teams are subsidized by the cities and communities they exist in .. including such hot beds of liberalism like Texas, Georgia, and Utah.

Gwinnett stadium backers follow Texas’ lead

The folks in Frisco, Texas, have been awfully busy the past few years.

After hearing a new mall that transformed the community into a commercial powerhouse might not survive without more shoppers, city leaders set out on a plan to transform the city into a center of sports tourism.

They built a bicycle racing venue. Then a baseball stadium. A hockey arena. A convention center. A soccer stadium. Hotel occupancy has exploded, along with taxes on room rentals, said James Gandy, president of the Frisco Economic Development Corp. Sales tax collections also have increased.

It’s a model Gwinnett County (Georgia) leaders frequently point to when they argue their new 10,000-seat baseball stadium will catalyze development around the Buford Drive site near Lawrencville, more than making up for the $64 million cost, including the cost of the land. The county is covering $31 million of the cost in cash.

frisco LOL, the community built around sports center hopefuls.

You'd think that Arlington TX would have learned it's lesson with GWBush and the ballpark in Arlington. The residents got shafted and Bush still owes them 7 million dollars, yet they went ahead and forced more of their fellow citizens to give up their homes to build and transfer ownership of the biggest football stadium in the country over to jerry jones in the hopes that they'll make good tax revenue off of it. At least they got the Superbowl coming soon, but thats about all the benefit they will get from it. traffic right now is a nightmare and the stadium isn't even open yet. I can't wait for all the complaining they'll get when that stadium opens.

BAC, I would love to take you to some places in Alabama. I think you would enjoy yourself.

Bellingrath Gardens is an amazing place if flora is appealing to you.

The history in Mobile is amazing.

Some blues music venues in Birmingham are pretty good.

You just need a good host/tour guide, BAC.

I appreciate that my good brother and I don't doubt these places are as good as you describe .. and, I won't say one negative word about such a welcome offer.

I'd love to return the favor and show you around the metro Atlanta area.

I regret being transfered to Chattanooga without having had the opportunity to meet you for lunch. But I will take you up on your offer some time.

I'd love to see your metro atlanta.

The argument about subsidizing sports arenas is debatable .. but my point was that there are more than just liberal cities doing it.

My wife and I go to Chattanooga often .. especially to the aquarium and IMAX.

There is an aquarium in Atlanta, the worlds largest, but they keep mammals .. something I have serious problems with .. thus we don't go there. There is also an IMAX here as well .. but since we look for any excuse to get on the road, we make it a weekend and do the town.

That sounds like an excellent plan. I haven't seen the Atlanta aquarium, but I have been thru Chattanooga's several times. Great stuff.

BAC, you'd have to live out here to know just how liberal places like frisco, arlington, and dallas are. They are totally liberal hotspots in this state. frisco is chock full of the government grant money recipients doing study on this or that idiotic project or commercial entities in the surrounding areas.

I don't know Texas very well so I'll take your word for it. Whenever travelling through Texas I keep to I-40 .. gets me in and out in the least amount of time. Howvere, I doubt if there are any liberal cities within the entire state of Utah .. which by the way, has improved its image considerably through sports .. particularly the Utah Jazz.

Who would have ever thought that Utah woiuld be a destination for African-American visitors?

I even root for them now.

Just for you my brother I'd put aside my disagreement with housing mammals and go to the aquarium here with you .. but I also think you'd like our zoo, which has an excellent Great Ape facility.

Yep, this is why it's a better comparison to compare cities instead of states.

Is that where they demonstrate how the first ''doublewide" was put together and the revolution in home dwellin's that followed?

For a moment I thought that said Grape Ape... I was halfway to the airport... cause that would indeed rock.

I know you stipulated I couldn't post, but last I checked, you weren't the boss of me. So, here I am, posting in your stupid thread, and you won't do a damn thing about it.

Let me start by saying, yes, Alabama has had its dark days, and as any Alabama public school student can attest, we learned about these events every single year of our schooling in state history class. I believe, as a result of this, my generation and beyond, are much more sensitive and aware of racial divisiveness. Because of our education on our state's heritage, we tend to be much less ignorant, bigoted, and racist.

A few things to add to your list...

Tuxedo Junction
Bear Bryant
Senior Bowl
Hank Aaron
Willie Mays
Jesse Owens
Carl Lewis
Joe Louis
Nat "King" Cole
Lionel Hampton
Hank Williams Sr.
Hank Williams Jr.
Bobby Goldsboro
William Christopher Handy
Harper Lee
Helen Keller
Coretta Scott King
Ralph Abernathy
Kate Jackson
Emmy Lou Harris
Jim Nabors
George Lindsey
Heather Whitestone
Tuskegee Airmen
Tuskegee Institute
UAB Medical Center
Marshall Space Flight Center
Redstone Arsenal

Not to mention, the ORIGINAL American Mardis Gras.

HEY! You can't claim Jesse Owens!!! He's a Buckeye!!!! He may have been born in Bama but he spent most of his life up here in God's country! :)

Oh yea...you just reminded me. One of my favorite Scientist was from Bama. George Washington Carver. One of the greatest inventors ever.

Doubtless. Because it's true.

One thing different between Alabama and Michigan... People who make cars in Alabama actually understand what a profit is.

Un Huh....come talk to me in 50 years when Alabama actually has a track record for making cars.

Damnit....don't make me say something nice about that state up north!!!

Lots of athletes come from the south so I doubt they'd have a problem living there. There aren't sports teams in those 2 because the market is too small.

Liberal Hartford lost the Whalers, Liberal Seattle lost the Sonics while Oklahoma now has the Thunder.
Conservative areas attract business of all kinds.

Most particularly hookers.
