Alabama Has The Worst Poverty In The Developed World

I have been pretty careful to state that conservatives are largely responsible for our nation's legacy of social Darwinism.

Conservatism has not historically been limited to the Republican Party, nor do I think blue dog Democrats, neoliberals, and Bourbon Democrats escape their share of blame.

Why is that the allegedly Kenyan-Marxist-Socialist republics of western Europe do not allow this kind of abject poverty? Why is in unique to the United States, in the developed word.

One of the beauties of America is (was) we allowed people from all over the world to come here. Many came with nothing and went on to start businesses, raise families etc. Point being there will always be poverty such as those type people. What we don't see are people starving and dying in our streets. We spend lots of money on those in need.

Look at Europe today. Lots of ghettos have been created with immigrants. Lots of poverty in those areas. They have opened their borders to many people but are not in an economic situation to give them all the same services they do natives.

It's not a difficult concept to understand where the wealth lies in this country and how urban and rural counties are set up.

Democrats have a strange way of showing their love with all the urban poverty we have if that's your argument.

What isn't a difficult concept to understand is that republicans control the poorest states, counties, and districts in the country.

Feel free to ignore that.

Freedom, of course. </sarcasm>

A good lot of it is the rampant belief that any sort of social net = socialism. The conjobs and their propaganda machines have done a great job convincing the idiots that vote (R) that helping other people out equals some sort of slavery both for those who do the helping and for those who receive the help. If you can construct your towns in such a way that this horror is out of sight, it's also out of mind. It's like the stuff you hear when a homeless shelter is proposed: "Those people want to live that way. We can't force them to come inside (or not be poor).... that's taking away their freedom."

I'm sure you are aware that there is a subset of the Deplorables who believes that most people who live in poverty are black, and that Democrats try to keep them that way. So I mentioned that in Appalachia there is also abject poverty, among the white folks who live there.

I wonder what that guy would have found if he had traveled through parts of rural Mississippi?

Leaving aside the offensiveness of the deplorable term (read this if you want to see a black person call out the racism in the Democratic Party https://www.theroot.com/a-racist-flyer-might-cost-doug-jones-the-election-becau-1821065764) there are plenty of poor whites in this country. Anyone who lives in rural America knows this.

As if one some black guy negates the thoughts of millions and millions of other blacks WHO VOTE FOR DEMOCRATS IN OVERWHELMING NUMBERS .. ALL WHILE YOU COMPLETELY IGNORE THE RAMPANT RACISM OF YOUR OWN NEARLY ALL WHITE PARTY.

Was it this guy?

A convicted murderer.

... wow

Let me help you out my friend since I read the Polifact story where you got this information. These counties are in states that voted for Mitt Romney in 2012. It says nothing about areas that Republicans control. They could all have Democratic Governors and local leaders.

The Polifact article specifically goes into what I said, urban poverty is offset by adjacent wealth which throws the numbers off. So you're trying to sell a dishonest story.

The Root isn't exactly a right-wing site. And considering the writer is a Democrat what do you think the chances are he's there holding a Blacks for Trump sign?

You're absolutely right. The *only* reason, as I said earlier, that I brought up Appalachian poverty is to point that out.

So -- what's your opinion? Rather than pointing fingers of blame, is this something that should be addressed? Ignored? If addressed, then how?

Whenever we see extreme poverty, and environmental devastation in a state, we also see a Republican governor/state government.

And the locals vote against their best interests every time. Which is why they always make the cuts to education first.

How does California have the highest poverty rate in the country then?

Let me help you out brother .. I didn't get the information from Politifact .. it just confirms the truth that you run from like your ass is on fire.

Hope that helps .. and may I add .. you completely ignore the rampant racism within YOUR own nearly all white party.

Why do you think it is that you do that?

That's not poverty. That's freedom. Don't you know freedom when you see and smell it?

Some parts of Appalachia are as bad if not worse. Thought I would throw that in there so the haters won't claim that the Alabama folks are that way because of race.
With all the talk of Jones needing support from the black community in the upcoming election...and not getting it...I was surprised to find that only 22% in Alabama are black voters.

This is what it boils down too. How do you address it? Even the wealthier states have pockets of poverty stricken areas.
