Why is BP taking all the blame?

So if it happened off the Canadian West Coast you wouldn't give a shit because it is not in your country, despite it being a damn sight nearer than the Gulf of Mexico.

That's not what I said dork! This is my country and as such of course it concerns me...get it now Tom. I also showed how it impacts all American's no matter where we live geographically.

Having an opinion about the ins and outs of this disaster has nothing whatsoever to do with the ins and outs of other disasters!

You need a zanax~

So therefore you are not in a position to know if my viewpoint is just me or one held widely.

its quite interesting to watch you whine about how americans in the past, before 24/7 cable, internet etc....weren't paying enough attention to other oil disasters....yet you go to your british media and the spill here is not front and center...

like i said, it does matter if its in one's back yard...if your family died in your house, it would be all you think about, but if someone 10 blocks away dies and you never knew this person, it wouldn't even register, except, maybe, poor chap

To deny the anti-British rhetoric on display both here and elsewhere is just incredible, if you think this is some kind of delusion on my part then you obviously don't read any of the British media. What we most object to is the vicious castigating of one company whilst ignoring all the others, you said yourself that it will probably lead to much greater regulation and maybe the ending of offshore drilling. That's up to the American people but they should know what the consequences of that are likely to be. I also find the sudden conversion of so many neo-cons to eco-cons quite incredible, most live either in landlocked or west coast states so why the fuck they even care is totally beyond me.

Let's be clear, BP is being castigated because the current administration needs a scapegoat. This is all about their precious political power, and control of government, of which they want MORE of and not LESS. BP, being conveniently foreign, AND being Big Oil, are a perfect target! In the spirit of Rham's Mantra, never to let a good crisis go to waste, I really have to wonder if this administration has INTENTIONALLY drug its feet in responding, so that people will realize the overwhelming and massive devastation, and they can 'spin' it into a victory in their war against Big Oil! I hate to think that our leaders could be so callous and devious, but I wouldn't put it past this administration... wouldn't surprise me one bit!

But Tom, that's the reason you are hearing the unusual amount of castigation, the conservatives hold you accountable for the cost of cleaning this up, but BP has admitted it is accountable, and has acted commendably so far, in dealing with the huge public relations nightmare, while at least TRYING to do something to help. That's more than I can say for Obama!

You live in California, so why do you care then? I assure you though that you might care if deep water drilling is banned or made so difficult that companies prefer to go to Angola or Brazil instead. The British media have been covering this in enormous detail and pointing out from tabloids to broadsheets how biased, nasty, illogical and hypocritical much of the American coverage is.

apparently you don't realize how large the scope of this disaster is. further, you are cold hearted arsehole (is that english enough to make you proud :))....though i lived no where near the tsunami victims, i still donated money...why would i care, if i live in california? because our world is not compromised solely of california. the earthquake in haiti dominated our news for over a month....the tsunami for many months....yet you aren't whining about that....we live in 24/7 media now tom....accept it

if this had been some other company not 40% british owned, that didn't have so many of your precious pensions, you wouldn't give a shit.

i just went on bbc.com and it is not front and center....why? because its not your backyard tom.

So now you don't like our leftist MSM? The media is merely running with the presidents talking points. Still, this does not lessen the liability of BP as it has already been shown that on at least some safety issues that corners were cut; it was their drill.

Do you have retirement tied up in BP? Really, I am curious.

So why do so many others on here have difficulty seeing that as well?

Probably, most UK pension funds have some exposure to BP.

Tom you are being shanghied.

I read the news everyday, check the internet reports, and watch the nightly news on the TV and most of what I've heard are reports about what the impact this is having on the beachs and the fishing industry.

I'm not sure where you're getting the idea that America is bashing Britain.

Probably, most UK pension funds have some exposure to BP.

You mean you really don't know how your pension is invested? You don't get an annual report? I would think that as someone who does not support drilling that you'd be sure to not be invested in a company that does deep water drilling all around the globe...you know, opt out for conscientious grounds.

So tell me how supporting drilling domestically is equal to being upset at a company because they failed to follow safety protocols that likely caused the disaster?

For your information, I was in Thailand when the tsunami struck in 2004.

When did I say that I don't support offshore drilling? You don't actually know anything about the events that led to the loss of the oil rig and the subsequent explosion, everything you know is gleaned from an hysterical media, both left and right, which is churning out conspiracy theories. I have also never said that BP shouldn't pay compensation, what they shouldn't have to do is take all of the opprobrium whilst Transocean, Anadarko and Halliburton refuse to accept any blame or pay any compensation. I think it is hilarious that you all know about BPs apparently bad safety record yet it was due to get a safety award when the rig blew up.
