Simi-automatic rifles were banned.

The Public Safety and Recreational Firearms Act was enacted as part of the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act of 1994. The prohibitions expired on September 13, 2004. The Act prohibited the manufacture, transfer, or possession of "semiautomatic assault weapons," as defined by the Act.

the act prohibited certain features. It did not work as planned. it saved no extra lives, nor did it cost any more lives. It was, for all intent and purposes, useless.

I don't recall any legally owned assault weapons being confiscated

The most famous massacre, Columbine, occurred during that period. That started the whole mass shooting fad among millenial Caucasians.
