New York, California lost more tax income than every other state

You can't count 2023 until it's over.

If you do you are going by months not years and nobody cares about monthly population counts.

Agreed. But for 2020-today the population is essentially the same--39 million. Many people left CA and many moved to CA.

Well we will have to wait to see after the year ends and the numbers come out.

But realize that population also increases due to birth rates so the fact it's been declining or remaining relatively the same does not indicate people are moving there.

The real problem is the last 2 years of income which is what the IRS uses for the data may not be the same as the next 2 years of income.
Someone that has an adjusted gross income of $150,000 in their last 2 working years in NY, then retires and moves to Florida may have a gross income of $50,000 in retirement.
More like lots of jobs in Florida but the vast majority are low paying unskilled service sector jobs.

My wife is the General manager of a 200 room business class hotel. She earns, to my surprise, about 20% more working in downtown Columbus than she would as a GM at a comparable hotel in either Orlando or Las Vegas.
