“Woke”

You struggling to decide if Joe is woke of racist? How many racist statements uttered by a racist, that they have to "apologize" for, constitutes "...trying not to be racist"?

It’s not an either or, everyone has racist attitudes or ideas in their head, woke is simply trying to be aware of it and working to change.

WOKE and CRT are leftist tools intended to shut down anyone of opposing political interests. When the label 'racist' is applied in a way that brands someone from birth and 'woke' is intended to differentiate a learning concept of racism and those who have supposedly gotten 'better' about it with no evidence possible to back it up, they become meaningless terms. Hell, you have morons on your side calling people racist because they REFUSE to look at skin color, which tells us all that you're only use for racism is a weapon

NO, attempting to shut down racism.

But they are whatever gender they think they are simply because they call themselves that gender right?

No, but they are free to call themselves whatever they choose and it is none of the government's business. We are free to list any race we want on our census form.

Oh i agree. The govt is involved in a LOT of shit it has no business being involved with

Woke is a derogatory term used against people for trying not to be racist.

Well hell, at least we're not talking about the economy, the border, china, the biden crime family, putin, inflation, erosion of parental rights, abortion, Ohio, CRT, LBQTWXYZOUN and sometimes Y issues, crumbling blue shitholes...anybody feel free to jump in here. I mean, it's just a bunch of trivial crap compared to "woke". Did you work on this all night, Jar Jar?

"Woke" is a term used to describe a state of consciousness that is the opposite of "asleep".

You dont imagine leftists actually give a shit about the stuff you listed do you?

Exactly. Use the right terms and call others racist if they don't want CRT, affirmative action, or reparations. That proves you can't be racist and establishes your liberal credentials as the great white hope for poor minorities.

Great point. Using reparations as an example. The argument has been made that to be woke means to support reparations and to not support reparations is to be anti-black. We've all seen the polls that show a majority of Americans do not support reparations, and that includes people who would otherwise call themselves woke. There's a whole laundry list of items we could go down where people define the woke position differently.

'Don't be racist' sounds simple in theory but based on how one defines the term racist there's actually nothing simple about it.

Words are like that, but I’m pushing back on the “new” meaning of “woke” because it’s an attempt to attack those trying to fight racism, and I believe we still need to fight racism.

What your witnessing is the 'hijacking' of the definition of the term woke and the pushback in society against it. It's why you have people who call themselves woke pushing back against wokeness. It's why a black liberal like John McWhorter can write a best selling book called Woke Racism (the racism of people who proclaim themselves woke), because the pendulum as gone so far to the other side.

If you think fighting racism by using racism is woke then I don't know what to tell you.

Enough to make a Trumper puke.

And does anyone REALLY believe that if reparations could ever be made that the topic of "racism" would vanish from the American political landscape?

Colleges have sided with students who opposed a (black) speaker who was going to speak against reparations because it is "insensitive" to minorities.

That one CA group wants to give all blacks $5 million and then give low income black families $98,000 per year for 250 years. Not sure how they are low income if they get $5 million.

Somebody is going to call us racist for these posts.

It's 2023. The fact that we still have people posting the definition of woke as if they, or others, don't know the dictionary term is head shaking. By the dictionary definition yes, we should all be woke. How the term is applied in the real world doesn't always match its definition. That's why you have people who even call themselves woke pushing back against wokeness and all that is entails. So posting a definition of the term and saying #staywoke in 2023 hits very differently than when (at least I first saw) people doing it in like 2015.

It's like the term anti-racist. On the surface sure, if the alternative is pro-racist then yes I'd rather be anti-racist. But that doesn't mean ideas or policies are good because one labels them anti-racist. Woke is the same.

The conventional dictionary definition is past tense of wake. The dictionary currently includes a "slang" definition for "woke" in the political context used as a cudgel by Right wingers against leftists, an imprecise mockery that works because of its very imprecision. When you ask Righties to explain what it means you inevitably get evasions like yours and others in this thread.
