Which is why I don't believe Dems will make any deals with him. They'll agree to vote with establishment Rs to name a sane Speaker, though

I don't recall ever saying there would be a Dem. speaker. You can c/p if you saw it.

Politicians cut deals all the time, but that is for votes on bills that are already written.

What exactly could keep McCarthy from reneging on a deal he makes just to become Speaker?

And that's why he'll either herd all of his cats, or he won't be Speaker. There is no deal that he could possibly make with Dems in order to get the position.

Establishment Republicans are probably already talking with Dems to figure out who they would vote for.

It won’t be a Democrat, it would be a Republican that didn’t support Trump’s coup, or suck up to him, afterward.

One of the concessions McCarthy gave the MAGA psychos yesterday is that a no confidence vote can be called if just 5 members want to remove the Speaker. He will face much more pressure to keep his promises.

But who's competing with him? All I see is a handful of MAGA neo-Nazis insisting that McCarthy help them destroy the country or they won't vote for him. I don't think this is about finding the right party leader as much as it is about giving MTG, Boebert, and Gaetz what they want.

The Republican party lost control of itself decades ago, but now it's an uncontrollable dumpster fire. They chose to give the radical right this much power. Now they have to live with it -- and hopefully keep losing elections as a result.

Trump's a loser. The Republican party didn't control the party or him through the 2016 campaign and the nightmare of a presidential term that followed. I don't think he wanted to be Speaker, but at this point, they don't even know what to do. My best hope (for today) for the 2024 election is that the Republicans bomb as badly as I think they will and that Biden goes away.

It’s busy work which would make the same 5 look sillier if they kept asking for a no-confidence vote and Kevin kept winning the confidence vote.

The Republican Party could break itself in the next two years if they can’t get their act together.

Agreed about the Speaker. He sold his soul to become Speaker..and not necessarily to Trump.

When in our entire history has the Speaker become President? I think it’s just the bragging rights that he likes. Agreed he’s not an “idea man”.
