He's sold his soul and traded all of his horses and still doesn't have the votes because the Republican House margin is so narrow: 222 Republicans with 218 votes to become Speaker IIRC.

I doubt he can move the MAGAts so his next effort will be garnering Democrat votes through similar horse-trading. That requires the consent of a majority of Republicans.

Virginia discovered it had plenty of money to work on infrastructure of any sort of national interest (highways) and has been busy beavers fixing bridges etc. Schools are local and with declining enrollments, we can just shutter the shittier ones and have more $ for the rest.

Yes, I believe that power lies with both the head of the Senate and the House. They can also deny someone a committee assignment. They are pretty powerful.

It takes years, if not decades, for a political party to die. Who was the first Republican President and what party did they replace after several decades?

Older Americans remember when that wasn't so. It only happened after Reagan cut a deal with Falwell's Christian Coalition to secure the 1980 election. Senator Barry "Mr. Conservative" Goldwater even spoke out about it in his famous speech to Congress.
