Far right holding out on McCarthy!

It's moving toward a real shit show.

"McCarthy agreed on a conference call Sunday to make it easier for lawmakers to potentially oust him in the future, Politico and CNN report, granting a demand from his opponents that just five lawmakers from the majority party can force a no-confidence vote for the Speaker.

The House GOP released a rules package on Sunday—which isn’t finalized yet—that also contains other rules that further-right lawmakers have pushed for, CNN reports, like creating a new committee to investigate the Biden Administration’s purported “weaponization” of the Justice Department and FBI.

The proposed rules would also allow the House Ethics Committee to take ethics complaints from the public, kill congressional staffers’ unionization efforts and outlaw remote hearings, among other measures, according to CNN.

Those concessions still might not be enough: Nine GOP lawmakers released a letter after the conference call Sunday saying that while McCarthy’s entreaties toward them are “welcome” and the “progress made thus far has been helpful,” it still isn’t enough to address their concerns.

Some lawmakers plan to vote against McCarthy even if he gives into all of lawmakers’ demands, Politico reported Monday, such as Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.), who’s one of five “Never Kevin” lawmakers who have already come out against McCarthy."

I doubt it will happen, but my fantasy is that the Republican moderates will have to look to the Democrats to help them get to 218 votes. In that scenario, the Democrats will have some say in picking a moderate Republican to be speaker of the house.

So what power does the Speaker really have? Do they have the power to prevent a bill from coming up for a vote? Example: The (D)s craft a bill allowing abortion to save the life of the mother. Some (R)s also sign on so it has majority support. Could a Speak McCarthy refuse to bring it to a vote in order to pass it on to the Senate?

I believe the Speaker can refuse to refer any bill to a committee, thereby killing it.

That scenario will probably play out to an extent. It’ll still be Kevin, but the Republicans will have to give concessions.

My guess is those concessions are on the 1/6 committee and nailing all who were involved. Republicans don’t have to do anything except stay out of the way.

A slight correction. The "far right" = the radicals. Agreed they'll cave and mainstream Republicans will have McCarthy as Speaker...after Kevin signs away the rest of his soul to them.
Agree. He'll no doubt have to agree to allow one vote to bring removal hearings. It looks like they might have to have a number of votes on this, though

There’s a good chance he’ll need some Democrat votes. If so, that’ll require some concessions too.

He could make promises, then change his mind! Isn’t that a Republican thing now, like all those hills Trump said he would sign, just bring them to his desk and then he’d change his mind. He burnt a lot of Republicans that way.

Mccarthy wants the office and the prestige that comes with the speakership. The line of succession intrigues him too. But he is a pretty shallow man who sold his soul to Trump. He is not an idea man.

I would absolutely love a Republican family fight in Congress, but I don't think those crackheads have a choice but to cave.
I'm waiting for all of the subpoenas of Democrats, that will go ignored.

He set the ground rules. Now let's laugh and point fingers as they screech about Democrats ignoring Congressional subpoenas.

Neither of which are national issues.

Virginia discovered it had plenty of money to work on infrastructure of any sort of national interest (highways) and has been busy beavers fixing bridges etc. Schools are local and with declining enrollments, we can just shutter the shittier ones and have more $ for the rest.

So the House will really have nothing better to do than investigate democrat corruption ! Thats good as it will keep them really really busy !
LMFAO@ 'discovered'.

WASHINGTON – Today, U.S. Sens. Mark R. Warner and Tim Kaine (both D-VA) announced $25,000,000 in federal funding for the expansion of I-64 in New Kent County. Awarded through theDepartment of Rural Surface Transportation Grant program (RURAL), this funding will add a third lane to I-64 in each direction, widen shoulders, add rumble strips and wider and flatter clear zones for an approximately 10-mile segment in New Kent County.

He's sold his soul and traded all of his horses and still doesn't have the votes because the Republican House margin is so narrow: 222 Republicans with 218 votes to become Speaker IIRC.

I doubt he can move the MAGAts so his next effort will be garnering Democrat votes through similar horse-trading. That requires the consent of a majority of Republicans. What do you think those deals will be all about?* LOL

*throwing the MAGAts and 1/6 supporters to the DOJ.
I don't believe Dems will trust him. They won't vote for him, but would be happy to help get a sane speaker elected if it came down to it.

I'm guessing the Dems already have enough sane Republicans that won't vote for McCarthy, and are plotting the real Speaker.

Yes. That's exactly what Boehner did, and Ryan after him with the bi partisan Senate immigration bill.
