No. That's just how many deaths each state self-identified as having been caused by COVID. But since there is no standardization across states, that's meaningless data. One state could report every death where someone was even suspected of having COVID, while another could report only deaths where the person died on a ventilator from a COVID-induced lung failure. That's why the excess death data is so important. It doesn't rely on every state's eccentric decision about which deaths to identify as COVID-related. It just relies on them to count corpses and report the results to the CDC, the same way they did every week since long before the pandemic. That approach tells us which states had their mortality rates rise fairly little during the pandemic (e.g., Massachusetts), and which had it soar drastically (including Texas and Arizona).
