Nonetheless, Kennedy v. Bremerton School District arrives before the justices Monday. It brings vexing questions about the ability of public employees to live out their faith while on duty and the government’s competing responsibility to protect schoolchildren from coercion and to remain neutral on the subject of religion.

The case offers a court that has recently been overwhelmingly protective of religious rights the chance to transform decades of Supreme Court jurisprudence that started 60 years ago with the admonition that government cannot organize and promote prayer in public schools.

It will be very interesting to me if these conservative judges believe in a living changing constitution when faced with a conservative cause that would require it.

I will never understand what football has to do with religion. You are asking God to smote your enemies?!

I guess you could pray that no one get injured? But if the person leading the prayer is a Public school employee, isn’t that promoting the establishment of religion? How could a not be?

And why is the coach so insistent in pushing his legal case after being rejected many times? He clearly wants to promote religion.

Yes, I suspect the right is going to be very disappointed and in trumps supreme court appointments. They are conservative, but in a small government sort of way, not in a social wedge issue/culture war sort of way

He can’t LEAD a prayer

Can a coach who believes in the great spaghetti monster lead a circle of talking like a pirate encouraging the team to fight like pirates and plunder the other team?

Or is that only for christians?

The prayers were COMPLETELY VOLUNTARY.

READ THE 1st AMENDMENT.

IT DOESN'T SAY THAT THE FREE PRACTICE OF RELIGIION SHALL NOT BE INFRINGED, "UNLESS IT MAKES THE LEFTIDIOTS MAD".

It can still be promoting the establishment of religion, even if it’s voluntary. Promoting does not have to be forced.

government cannot organize and promote prayer in public schools.
lots of factors to look at. like if the coaches are paid employees or using government time.
also the definitions of "promote and organize"

If it's not on the governments dime -it should pass muster

but are they organizing or promoting while on government time They could be volunteers for the game. or teh game is not on governemnt time
There is a lot of nuance here - best read the filing or the Orals to find out before commenting

The school is the one who told the coach not to pray.

The coach is allowed to pray, He is not allowed to lead students in a prayer.
I think he can -but it depends on the circumstances. Being a lawyer I know you are familiar
It cant be on govt time.. It can be on gov't facilities after school ...but there is so many variables

You're a lawyer who opines on events you are completely--deliberately--ignorant about.
