Will Smith Slap, without it most folks would not know that the Oscars were on...

Do you think it may have been staged? They need to feel relevant, the Oscars themselves used to be enough as folks would watch it, nowadays, only their mothers watch it, and then they watch a replay so they can skip all the rest of those idiots to get to their own kid.

I can't imagine it increased viewership at the time. People are talking about the Oscars more today than they likely would have but is that guaranteed to mean increased viewership next year to see if more violence occurs? Will Smith is arguably one of the most famous people on the planet and won an Oscar last night. What's the incentive for him to do that? Chris Rock has always been popular and is currently on a big tour. I guess one could say maybe this will draw more attention to that tour so maybe he benefits that way.

I didn't realize they still put that shit on TV.

there was zero question that it had lost 100% of its appeal and was desperate for any sort of relevance.

swing and a miss if this was indeed a calculated risk.

I do not watch award shows. My wife does and she was not bothered by the slap. It could not have been planned as a boost to ratings since it was on live. I doubt next year people will be turning in for violence.

That is absurd, Nordberg.

I can suggest that I will get up and fake slap you before the show started, crap I can do it in the head just before you go on stage... Pretending they couldn't stage this is just silly.

I don't think it was for viewership. I think it was for the articles and time on the news shows following. I don't think most folks would have reported on this stupid nonsense without the drama of "the slap heard on the news"...

I wouldn't be surprised. Haven't cared about that thing in years. How many people have even heard of the movies or the actors who are nominated? *yawn*

It would be very risky for the Oscars to do something like this.

I just wonder why both actors would agree to such a thing that could end their careers through public disgust, and if it was staged, why not reveal it when Smith made his speech for his Oscar?

The Academy has also announced it is investigating Will Smith, so I don’t think we've heard the last of this.

Probably not. If publicity was the aim, why not just have a simple wardrobe malfunction? ;)

No it was not staged?!! Will Smith is immature and should have address the issue when he accepted his Oscar, this sets a bad example for young people too, you don't settle things like that with violence?!! Chris Rock's joke about Will's wife was also inappropriate too and immature on his part?!!

I suspect it was a publicity stunt to drive audiences to their respective career vehicles.

Actually, that is true.
I had no idea - nor did I give a shit - that the Oscar's were on until this slapping shit happened and everyone started focusing on it.

Please...let me die instantly the day I give a SHIT about the Oscar's or ANY other awards show.
May I never be that simple and small-minded.

Mildest joke ever about the Smiths... Their open marriage invites far worse jokes all the time.
