Fact Check-Video of military activity in a field is from years ago, not related to Russia’s Ukraine invasion

A years-old clip showing heavy firing in a field is making rounds. Media accounts have mistakenly claimed the scene depicts Russian military activity in Ukraine amid the February 2022 Russian invasion.

The video appears to show soldiers in a field under heavy incoming fire.

Reuters was not able to independently source the footage, but it is not recent and not related to the current situation in Ukraine.

Reuters identified a slightly longer version of this same clip circulating since at least Dec. 20, 2018.

Fact Check-Nighttime clip of aircraft flying amid artillery fire is animation and predates Russia-Ukraine conflict


CGI footage of aircraft flying amid nighttime artillery fire is not related to the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The video was uploaded to YouTube in October 2021 by a 3D animator who claims to have created the footage.

The clip is not recent, however, nor is connected to the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

A reverse image search shows that the video was uploaded by 3D animator with the username Borisao Blois, in October 2021. The title of the YouTube video at that time, written in Spanish, says: “Want to know what it was like to be in WWII? This is for you...”

Fact Check-Photo of plane falling from sky is from 2015 air show

A photo of a plane plummeting from the sky followed by a trail of smoke and flames is falsely linking it to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The image, however, is unrelated to the conflict. It was taken in 2015, according to a stock image website.

One account sharing the image wrote “Ukraine military says it has shot down six fighter jets and a helicopter belonging to Russia.”

Fact Check-Footage of downed "Russian" plane was filmed in Libya

The media are falsely linking a video of a plane being shot down in Benghazi in 2011 to Russia’s February 2022 invasion of Ukraine.

In one instance, the clip appears beside the caption "Russian Jet shot down by Ukrainian SAM".

However, the video has been miscaptioned and is not related to the situation in Ukraine.

It shows a fighter jet shot down by Libyan rebels in Benghazi in 2011.

The clip is contained in raw footage posted online more than a decade ago. The Associated Press uploaded the full clip to YouTube on March 19, 2011.

Fact Check-Nighttime video of an explosion dates to 2015 warehouse explosion in Tianjin, China

A clip of a nighttime explosion in a built-up area was filmed in 2015 in a storage facility in the port city of Tianjin, China. The clip was miscaptioned, with claims that the video was filmed during the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

The 39-second clip shows footage of an explosion with two high-rise buildings visible.

One Twitter user shared the video and said: “A very sad moment in Ukraine. #RussiaUkraineConflict #Ukraine”. The clip had more than 42,000 views at the time of writing.

Another said: “when the rich wage war it's the poor who die". #Donbass #NATO #USA #JoeBiden #RussiaUkraineCrisis #RussiaUcraina #StopWar #StandWithUkraine #Biden” .

The clip is not recent, however, and is unrelated to the February 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine.

A reverse image search reveals that the video was published by numerous outlets, including BBC News, The Guardian and ITV News in August 2015.

A video of a large explosion at an undisclosed location has been shared online as "evidence" of a major development in Russia’s February invasion of Ukraine. However, the video can be traced back to September 2017.

The video is unrelated to the current situation in Ukraine, however, and was published widely by media outlets.

A clip of paratroopers descending from the sky dates to at least 2016 and is unrelated to the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, despite the clip being misattributed.

The video is not recent, however. The earliest iteration Reuters could find online dates to Sept. 4, 2016, when a user uploaded the 50 second clip to Twitter.

Fact Check-Video of Russian flag in Odessa miscaptioned

A video of a Russian flag flying in Odessa is being depicted alongside misleading captions that link it to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The footage of the Russian Consulate in Odessa, however, was captured before Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

The clip shows a video panning from a Ukrainian flag on top of a tall building to the ground, where a Russian flag is planted outside a large, white building.

However, the video does not show a Russian flag newly planted in Ukrainian city of Odessa.

It shows the exterior of the Consulate General of Russian Federation in Odessa, according to Reuters analysis using Google Maps.

The main point of this thread seems to be don't use social media, Youtube, or cable news as reliable sources. Most of us learned that when we got fake news about election fraud and Covid cures, and January 6.
