Sotomayor says she's "uniquely American"

Yes, we are all uniquely Americans but our life stories aren't necessarily uniquely American. I mean, a white guy born to privilege makes his way in the world and becomes successful happens in America, Iceland, Ireland, England, Sweden, Norway, Finland . . . It's not a uniquely American.

A Latina girl born into poverty in Puerto Rico moves to the Bronx, attends Princeton, graduates summa, attends Yale Law School, becomes editor of law review, becomes district court judge, becomes appellate court judge, nominated to Supreme Court is uniquely American. Perhaps you know of other countries where that is commonplace. I don't.

By the way, her statement wasn't about you. It wasn't about Annie or any of you other hyper-sensitive shitheads that have a perpetual victim complex. It was about Sotomayor and her life. Whether you like her or not, her story should be celebrated. And It is uniquely American.

oh for crying out loud..like a lot of us haven't had to climb from poverty..what is so unique about that...
it's always...I'm a victim, so I should automatically be appointed to the "highest court of country" because of it..she was horrible as a judge, was overturned numerous times, and is a racist to boot.
get real..

why in the world do you think the first example is not uniquely american....they are both american stories and unique in and of themselves...i find it passing odd how it is the libs who make race the issue, yet when a conservative does it, they are racist

we've been through this before, go look up national council of THE RACE and illegal immigration...go look up who they support

You haven't been through it with me, and I did look them up, that's why I referred to National Council of La Raza in the previous post. It looks like the illegal immigration business is a right-wing invention.

She was neither a horrible judge, overturned numerous times or a racist. Exactly which race are you referring to anyway?

"Of the majority opinions that Judge Sonia Sotomayor has authored since becoming an appellate judge in 1998, three of her appellate opinions have been overturned by the Supreme Court.

Our search for appellate opinions by Sotomayor on the LexisNexis database returned 232 cases. That's a reversal rate of 1.3 percent."

You think white guys born into privilege doing well in the world is uniquely American? That's just plain bizarre.

I hate to break it to you Yurt and I would have hoped that more than anyone above the age of fifteen with average intelligence would have figured this out on their own: while we all like to think that we are unique and special, we aren't.

And I'm not really making race "an issue." I'm merely pointing out that we do not all have uniquely American stories. Some of our stories are pretty common across the United States, Canada and Western Europe.

Once again, it isn't about you. And Sotomayor having a uniquely American story does nothing to denigrate your "uniquely American" experience to the extend you've had one. Simply because you think your story is uniquely American does not mean that her story is not. There can be more than one uniquely American story. It's not a contest with just one winner.

If you don't think Sotomayor's story is uniquely American perhaps you could tic off a few countries where a story like hers is common.

I get that you don't like her for the reasons you've been told you shouldn't like her, but this reflexive nonsense to deny the obviously true gets really tired really quickly. So does the victim complex.

And yet when her decisions reach the Supreme Court, she has a 60% reversal rate. Actually, with the recent decision in favor of the firemen, I believe the percentage has gone up. To simply talk percentages, however, is somewhat deceiving. Before the Supremes, she has been overturned four out of six times.

Now, while I do not favor her appointment to the highest court in the country, I believe that perhaps too much is being made of these statistics. Then again, I am not a lawyer...

But I did stay at a Holiday Inn last night...

wtf..who the hell said it is about me...are you friggen nuts?? babble on to someone else..

IMO They confuse it with La Raza Unida. (The Party of the United Race).

She's a member of the National Council of La Raza, which is an advocacy group like the NAACP, not of La Raza Unida which is a racist political party.

Both groups names are shorted to just "La Raza" but they are distinctly different groups. One should not be nominated if they are a member of La Raza Unida. While their stated goals may sound admirable, much like many other racist groups published goals do, they are not.

This is another in a long line of issues where the right just doesn't know when to shut the fuck up.

NEWSFLASH: Sotomayor Will Be Confirmed

... and there ain't a damn thing the right can do about it but cause THEMSELVES more damage at a time when they are viewed favorably but only 25% of the population .. AND when they are increasingly dependent on the hispanic vote.

The Supreme Court overturns approximately 75% of the cases it reviews so she's still below the average.

Well how about that...

there isn't A DAMN THING WE CAN DO ABOUT IT..

welcome to what used to be the United States of America.

Oh it's still the United States, just not your grandpappy's United States.

Republicans don't have the VOTES to stop Sotomayor .. AND they have acknowledged that .. THUS, there ain't a damn thing they can do to stop her.

Sorry for the lack of crayons.

the only possibility of stopping her lies in conservative states with dem senators who are vulnerable for re-election. don't know who that'd be, but there it is.

They have absolutely ZERO chance of stopping her.

As stated by Republican Senator Lindsey Graham, "Unless you have a complete meltdown, you are going to be confirmed."

Great, so we will now have our first member of La Raza and a racist Latina sitting in the supreme court..

The National Council funded the thousands of protesters in Los Angeles and around the country, with many illegals and legals carrying their own flags. They were protesting the very U.S. immigration laws they were violating. They found it offensive and a violation of their rights that the U.S. dared to have immigration laws to begin with.
