130 Americans will commit suicide today, but Democrats don't care

Awesome. Dude, you're smart enough to see that's treating the symptoms again, not the causes.

It's as silly IMO as the fucking Trumpers who want to build a 2000 mile wall to stop illegal immigration: treating the symptom, not the cause(s).

What happens when a suicidal person knows they can't use the Bridge? Go home and use their Robin Williams necktie? Their Anthony Bourdain belt in the closet? Just drive off a convenient overpass or head on into a semi

Isn't it time we started working smarter, not harder?

These are all good points Dutch.

Yeah we need to address the stigma of mental illness. It's nothing to be ashamed about.

What would happen if we proposed all public school kids should have both a physical and mental screening every year as a requirement for school? Paid for through the school system.

How many people would shit their pants over it and for what reason(s)?

I am pretty sure I have a good idea. ;)

Republicans would bitch about the money and try to shift even more school funds into their own pockets. Lefties would disclaim the unfairness of some people being mentally ill and others not so much.

In the end, the result would be exactly what we have now; both sides arguing about something else.

You just said it! It's all about the money!

Hello and welcome Turgid Member,

I normally acquaint newcomers with my own Personal Ignore Policy PIP: I like civil discourse. I will give you all the respect in the world if you respect me. Mouth off to me, or express overt racism, you will be PERMANENTLY Ignore Listed. Zero tolerance. No exceptions. I'll never read a word you write, even if quoted by another, nor respond to you, nor participate in your threads. ... Ignore the shallow. Cherish the thoughtful. Long Live Civil Discourse, Mutual Respect, and Good Debate! ps: Feel free to adopt my PIP. It works well.

If that is acceptable to you I thank you for understanding and hope we have many great discussions. If not, then we probably won't be talking long.

Great post!

Thanks. Glad you can appreciate the sentiment.

Actually, the banks did not fail. Not the commercial banks, anyway. It was the investment banks that failed. The issue was the some of those investment banks were owned by commercial banks. If that wasn't the case, they could have all gone under and we would have been just fine. This was a crisis of confidence in the banking system, and the impact of a failure of an investment bank that was owned by a commercial bank. I don't know exactly what could have been done other than to save the banks. We were days away from a run that would have destroyed the entire financial system. Why? Graham Leach Bliley. Yes, it was passed with bipartisan support, but it was a Republican bill, and it repealed Glass Steagal. Both sides share blame for that, but let's not pretend that this wasn't pushed by the GOP side of the aisle.

It was all kinds of banks and lots of them. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_bank_failures_in_the_United_States_(2008–present)

As noted in the link below, suicide will take, on average, 131 lives in the US today. Suicide is the tenth leading cause of death in the US overall but spikes in certain demographics. Why don't the Democrats care? Why do they believe banning guns will same more lives than better mental health care?

Access to mental healthcare has been a major issue that Democrats have been pushing, but there is a lot of pushback. Even if we can get universal healthcare, which includes mental healthcare, many mentally sick people would not be willing to get help. Then we have to start working on trying to convince those in need to get help, which is another huge hurdle.

None of this is easy. It will take time, and a lot of effort. Unfortunately, even easy things are hard with an evenly divided Senate.

What Australia proved was when you take away guns from suicidal people, about two thirds find another way to commit suicide, and about one third come to their senses and do not commit suicide. It is far from perfect, but it is a step in the right direction.

It's not a matter of pushing. It's a matter of priorities.

Gee, then if we lock everyone up in a cell with a video camera to monitor them, we can stop all suicides! ;)
