130 Americans will commit suicide today, but Democrats don't care

As noted in the link below, suicide will take, on average, 131 lives in the US today. Suicide is the tenth leading cause of death in the US overall but spikes in certain demographics. Why don't the Democrats care? Why do they believe banning guns will same more lives than better mental health care?

IMO, they don't care about saving lives. They only care about control. Nanny Statism is a Democratic ideal: an all-powerful Federal government which dictates what Americans, think, believe and do "for their own good". "For the children". That is not the Founders had in mind when they wanted Freedom for all.

https://www.americashealthrankings.org/explore/annual/measure/Suicide/state/ALL
Nationally, the suicide rate increased 25.4% from 1999 to 2016, with increases occurring in every state, save for Nevada. In 2018, there were an estimated 1.4 million suicide attempts and more than 48,000 deaths by suicide, making it the tenth leading cause of death in the United States. Firearms were involved in half of all suicides, and there were more than twice as many deaths by suicide than by homicide.

Societal costs associated with suicide and suicide attempts were estimated at $93.5 billion. These costs include lifetime medical fees and lost work costs.....

AND WHAT MAKES YOU THINK ANY AMERICAN WOULD NOT CARE ABOUT SUICIDE OR SUICIDE RATES? AND WHAT PROOF DO YOU HAVE ABOUT HOW EVERY AMERICAN FEELS ABOUT SUICIDE OR SUICIDE RATES- DEMOCRAT OR REPUBLICAN?

AND, AREN'T you just taking unproven CHEAP POTSHOTS AT THE DEMOCRATS for political spin?

SO, WITHOUT PROOF, why should anyone have any confidence in your political opinions?

LET ME GUESS! YOU ARE A MIND READER YES?

Well, I agree. It's wrong to make absolute statements about Republicans OR Democrats but that's what the media and forum posters do.

But do you really believe that Democrats "don't care about saving lives. They only care about control. Nanny Statism is a Democratic ideal: an all-powerful Federal government which dictates what Americans, think, believe and do "for their own good". "For the children".

Can you at least agree that that statement right there is so radical and extreme that it requires proof?
Otherwise, your comment is just another radical, extreme opinion that's intent is to 'scare' people, not inform them.

Agreed on absolute statements in general. Obviously the Democratic Party's anti-gun agenda has a long and consistent history of authoritarianism.

It's not absolutist to point out the Democratic Party wants to ban guns, some or all. Personally, as explained in the Yankees thread, I don't trust them to just stop at banning "some" guns.

Here's the same question I've asked Democrats and other anti-gunners since 2013: Had Obama's Gun Bill passed, would you be satisfied and stand with entire Republican Party and all gun owners in saying, "This is enough, no more. This bill solves the 'gun problem' in the United States"?

Do you think the Democratic Party would have stopped there or would they have pushed for more gun control laws in a year or after the next tragedy? You know, the whole never let a crisis go to waste thing.

I believe in treating both the symptoms and causes of such things.

With a limited budget, and as pointed out about ATF underfunding, you're smart enough understand prioritization. Financial and Political triage.

Sure, everyone wants everything. They want it now but they don't want to raise taxes or divert funds from their other favorites to make it work. WTF?

More lives could be saved by focusing on better mental health care and supporting legislation than in banning all guns. Hence the question, "Why do the fucking Democrats have a hard on to ban guns?"

FCC requiring all phone carriers to implement the number by July 2022

En español | In response to a growing suicide epidemic across the U.S., the federal government has approved a new national three-digit number like 911 that will connect callers with lifesaving resources in times of mental crisis.

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is requiring all phone service providers to direct all 988 calls to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline crisis center by July 16, 2022. The current number is a traditional length, 800-273-8255 (TALK).

The two-year transition period will allow widespread network changes and give the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline time to prepare for an expected increase in calls, the FCC says.

In 2018 the national network, made up of 163 locations, answered 2.2 million calls and responded to more than 100,000 online chats.

“When it comes to saving lives, time is of the essence, and we believe that 988 can be activated more quickly than other possible three-digit codes,” FCC Chairman Ajit Pai said. “In addition, 988 has an echo of the 911 number we all know as an emergency number.”

While that's a step in the right direction, no pun intended, it's still short of a mental health program that includes screening and treatment.

Democrats put this well behind gun control on their agenda and it's not even a reality in the Republican agenda. Therefore, not much is likely to change.

Hello evince,

I hope you know that's BS.

There's good people and bad people on both sides.

There's exaggeration on both sides, nasty insults on both sides, and very polite people on both sides.

Both sides have their BS talkers and their sincere people who say what they mean and mean what they say.

Those we/they stereotypes go a long way with a lot of people.

Not with me.

And you know that. We've been around enough that none of this post comes as any surprise.

How are you today?

Sounds like you're firing on all cylinders.

Great post!

The focus of their agendas.

Yes, the priority of Democratic agenda items.

Insult all you like. That'd be typical of political extremists to shit on anyone who disagrees or has a different way of doing things. People like you are the ones pushing "fall in line or else."

Thanks for proving my point!

I didn't insult anyone or shit on anyone or prove your point- SIR!

I just asked you some questions regarding your unproven claims!

This is how normal and civilized people discuss political issues- and most certainly in a Public Forum!

SIR, WITH ALL DUE RESPECT- I don't understand your attitude towards answering legitimate questions in a public FORUM or why you feel insulted by my questions SIR!

Your personal experience is telling you something you don't want to hear. Your aunt tried several times and was not successful until she used a gun. If your wife's brother didn't have a gun, it seems he might be alive because he might have survived several attempts without that gun.

Demanding the solution prevent all suicides is simply a logical fallacy on your part. Mental health care for all will never prevent all suicides. There is no all or nothing when solving the problem. No solution will be perfect. It is just a question of whether you truly want to decrease the number of suicides or not. Clearly you don't because you are taking solutions off the table without examining them at all.
I never said she didn't use a gun before. I said she'd made attempts, but you are free to leap to conclusions. Many Democrats do. ;)

She was bipolar and had depression. She didn't like taking her meds. It caused problems, but what was there to do?

"Demanding the solution prevent all suicides is simply a logical fallacy". No shit. Where did I write that?.....or is this one of those Democratic springboard thingies again?

Your argument is, "there's no way we can get to the Moon so let's not even try to fly". All I'm writing about is questioning the priorities of the Democratic Party and their members. You and several others have proved to me you are as fucking nutty, biased, bigoted and unwilling to discuss this topic as the worst Trumpsters are about Trump's four years of bullshit.

Are you denying the Democrats are more focused on banning guns than focusing on mental health care as the best means to stop 2/3s of all "gun violence"?

“They only care about control”?

100% horse shit

The Dens are not anti-gun, That is why when they had control of both houses they did nothing about the perverted love affair between rightys and guns. They did not even pass gun registration laws or background checks. Gun lovers can really bleat and cry.

I'm sure someone will care if you commit suicide?

They are not trying to ban all guns. Besides, there are many ways to commit suicide. Like seeing Hillary in the buff.

Not yet. Agreed about many ways.

Why do you think the Democrats focus on banning AR-15s to stop about 2/3s of all "gun violence"?

I think it's retarded. It won't stop gun violence. There are many ways to reduce gun violence.

Since 2/3s of those violent "gun deaths" are suicides, I agree about many ways. Mainly focusing on mental health.

It's mainly a cultural issue; people usually don't look down on someone who gets sick with the flu, but if they say they're depressed or display a few symptoms of mental illness, it's considered as negative a stigma as being a criminal.

Note the problems in Sen. Eagleton's Vice-Presidential candidacy in 1972 under McGovern. He had a "complicated medical background" resulting in a scandal about his mental fitness. That stigma hasn't changed much as far as society is concerned.

The main change is the perception that being LGBTQ doesn't automatically mean a person is mentally ill. Almost 50 years later and our society has moved the ball about 10 yards. ;)

https://www.npr.org/2012/08/04/157670201/the-thomas-eagleton-affair-haunts-candidates-today
The initial strategy was to address what happened, and Eagleton was forthcoming.

"On three occasions in my life, I have voluntarily gone into hospitals as a result of nervous exhaustion and fatigue," Eagleton told reporters at the time. "As a younger man, I must say that I drove myself too far, and I pushed myself terribly, terribly hard, long hours, day and night."

Despite his best efforts to address what happened in an honest way, the pressure began to mount. Democratic Party stalwarts called on Eagleton to step down.
