McConnell: Trump is responsible for inciting riot

You agree with McConnell on his interpretation of the Constitution. Do you also agree on his statement that Trump is guilty of the charges against him?

I could give a rats ass what McConnell thinks personally. It is the Constitution that matters. At least to those that do not want their rights taken away.

Spoken by Poopeye, the constitutional scholar.

I'm just trying to figure out how you reconcile apparently contradictory realities. Several Republicans voted guilty, and it seems to be the majority view among legal experts that this impeachment trial was constitutionally valid because the impeachment occurred while Trump was in office. (Otherwise, any president could knowingly commit an impeachable offense during his last weeks or days in office and not worry about personal legal repercussions.)

I am not.

I am not.

Then we'll agree to disagree. But my main concern about those who claim that this trial was unconstitutional is that such a claim allows for a loophole by which a sitting president may knowingly commit an impeachable offense at the end of his term and not worry about facing impeachment for it.

The Constitution is quite clear about this. Now that is stood the way it should, it might be the time for legal minds to address that potential loophole.

Hello Dutch Uncle,

Well, we are talking about a lot of people, many individuals. They are already kind of messed up, so there's no telling what one or a handful could do. Any kind of widespread planning would certainly be discovered before any incident, giving authorities time to plan. I would not look for any kind of surprise large scale activity, but there could certainly be incidents. It would probably be a really bad idea for them to try to hold some kind of rally or demonstration any time soon. I can't figure why our government has not designated them a terrorist group yet.

Agreed. A lot of them are going to prison. I expect most will just shut up and take their lumps. Not all, just most.

The Constitution isn't clear which is why the impeachment was voted Constitutional. Someone can argue it with SCOTUS if they like.

Regardless, there was no fucking way the Republicans were going to convict Trump. The reasons remain unclear, but it wasn't because he wasn't guilty or it wasn't appropriate to impeach and convict him.

I mean, if you did not know who said these words, your first guess might be Nancy Pelosi or even Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

"There's no question, none, that President Trump is practically and morally responsible for provoking the events of the day ... the people who stormed this building believed they were acting on the wishes and instructions of their president, and having that belief was a foreseeable consequence of the growing crescendo of false statements, conspiracy theories, and reckless hyperbole which the defeated president kept shouting into the largest megaphone on planet Earth."

-- Mitch McConnell, Republican Senate Leader

Seems there were various actors ‘in the mix’.

Did you ever figure out what Trump had to gain from blowing up his own objective that day?

I'm trying to figure out why trump's followers disobeyed him when he told them to "peacefully and patriotically make your voices heard."

They didn’t disobey him. They did exactly what he told them to do....then Trump betrayed all of them by labeling them criminals and refusing to pardon them. Very sad.

Like with OJ, everyone knows Trump is guilty except for the insane and the liars.

You and I know that but the trump lawyers think otherwise, based on their crackpot impeachment defense stressing the words "peacefully and patriotically." It is sad.

You and I don't have to be convinced but dozens of militia members may disagree with the President's legal strategy of throwing all of them under the bus. ;)

How long before they are officially designated as terrorists and arrested? The Feds have hundreds of pictures of these asshole from the past few years.

I agree with you and Mitch McConnell: there is no doubt -NONE - that Trump is responsible for inciting the rioting, shit-smearing, violence and vandalism of January 6.

Only a person of extraordinary dishonesty would deny it.

Agreed. The big mystery is "What comes next?"
