That's possible given the weaknesses of the Democratic Party, but it's just as possible that republicans are on their way to being the Whigs. They bet the house that Obama won't bring back some sanity to the economy .. but if he does .. bye-bye Republican Party.

Changing demographics dooms the party and the ideology of conservatism.

If republicans don't recapture power soon, they may never again have the opportunity.

That's not being talked about too much, but I don't think it can be over-stated. I can't remember a more clear line in the sand in recent political history; they are incredibly vested in economic failure right now.

If the economy recovers within the next year, or looks like it is definitely bouncing back, they are toast.

Speaking truth about the invasion of Iraq, for instance, was speaking truth to the power that was behind it.

As history has now recorded, McKinney was one of the few who had the courage to speak that truth even while the rest of the country, including the Democratic Party, was marching lockstep to patriotic stupidity .. and she spoke that truth even at the risk of her own career.

You're right on all counts brother .. and, it ain't looking good for them already.

If the economy recovers .. which doesn't mean the stock market has to be at 12,000 .. but if unemployment lessens and the housing market stabilizes, they are toast. They will have played no hand in America's recovery, only it's disasters.

I think this is the biggest thing that dooms the Republican party as we know it. The demographics in this country are changing and changing really fast. There is nothing the Republicans can do about it except change their message with them (the voters). So the Republicans as we know them will no longer be a political power within the next 10 years. Whigs......that's a good type to the modern day Republican antitype.
 
apparently all you people are purposefully ignoring the main reason that alot of republicans lost their seats is because they were too moderate, or not conservative enough, and their base either refused to vote or voted someone else. If the R party can show it's conservatism again, they will take their seats back.

That's the popular CW among party faithful, but it's just not in tune w/ reality. The base showed up this past election, and the GOP is not in danger of losing them.

The GOP lost independents; that's why they lost so many seats & the Presidency.

and those independents voted democrat because the republicans weren't conservative enough. One thing I'll say about Independents is that they will fuck you over hard if you fuck them over. That's what the Rs did, and they paid.
 
The GOP also just ran a lousy campaign, top to bottom. It was a "change" election, and they were never able to sincerly put forth any kind of coherent message to appeal to that.

They were just due for a loss; I think it's a mistake for them to think they just weren't conservative enough, but they may go that route.

They are doomed by their own inability to adapt and evolve as society evolves .. even though they have evolved before from the anti-slavery party of their inception that nearly all African-Americans belonged to .. to the right-wing hate-filled cabal of intransigent old white men that they have become today.
