When we were young, medical care was not that expensive. Companies offered full coverage without copays. The fact that healthcare costs have outsrtripped inflation by huge amounts, year after year, shows that they need controlling .
Healthcare should not be a for-profit industry.

Wow, are you ignorant? There is no free market and therefore no magic. We had our first tariff in 1789. We have had a manipulated economy since back then. We have over 13,000 tariffs now. Rightys just are not in touch with reality.
When America started, we chartered corporations. Their charter would not be renewed if they did things against the public welfare. How many would be renewed nowadays?

I also am 82...and the fact of the matter is that the United States has NEVER had some of the best healthcare in the world...and I defy you to show statistics that it had close to the best, or close to the most affordable...at any point in its history.

We are the ONLY industrialized nation that does not provide universal healthcare for all its citizens...and we consistently rank near the bottom of the industrialized nations in life expectancy. There are third world nations that rank higher than us in damn near every category of efficient or productive healthcare...MOSTLY OCCASIONED BY THE AMERICAN CONSERVATIVE insistence that we forego universal or single payer systems.

You and your notions are not part of the solution to our healthcare problems, Robo...YOU ARE THE PROBLEM.

That clarified, I do agree our healthcare system is broken, simply because there are so many who abuse it (illegals and some medicaid subscribers) and that increases the costs to those to us who pay insurance premiums. You cannot put the sole blame of our healthcare woes (or every other "problem" in this country) entirely on conservatives. Unfortunately, the American right has been programed by their puppet masters to always disparage anything that is not purely CAPITALISTIC (in capital letters)...so the notion of a national healthcare system cannot even be considered by them.

I think the American left (which probably is considered middle right in most nations) will finally prevail on this issue. But it has to be soon...which means Trump must go after this one abominable term.

Then along came the feds and began meddling in the health insurance business where they had no expertise. Government programs, mountains of regulations and paperwork closing down the low cost and free clinics because the government was taking responsibility for the poor and elderly. Once that gate got opened to the national treasury it became a free-for-all for prices and cost.

The fact that healthcare cost outstripped inflation year after year is the "fact" that the federal government indulged in the health insurance business where they had no constitutional authority to be and no expertise to begin with and the "fact" that America has been creating too damned many lawyers who love to chase ambulances and doctors and sue the shit out of them and drive up liability insurance rates for doctors and hospitals, and the "fact" tremendous advances in medical procedures and equipment became the norm at warp speed. and that cost money!

Every progressive socialist authoritarian despises profits, but in every case they have no rational arguments for any system to replace "for profit" in a world that only can advance successfully by the incentive means of profit.

If healthcare were non-profit, there would have never been the amount and genius of the tremendous advancements in medical procedures and medical equipment we enjoy today. Doctors would still be bleeding patients to cure them.

The facts here are that the left cannot make a rational argument why the states shouldn't and couldn't keep the money that the federal government waste on healthcare insurance and create their own health insurance systems as mandated by the 10th amendment to our Constitution, and thereby actually create a 50 state laboratory of experimentation that each state can learn from each other state and thereby come up with the very best health insurance policies in the end game.

Right now, the United States is not even ranked among the top 25 healthiest nations on the planet. (We're currently ranked #35.)

As far as healthcare is concerned...we are CONSISTENTLY ranked WORST among the industrialized/developed nations.
