A Civil Discussion: Evolution, Science, Theology, Atheism, Climate

If by ‘dominant’ you means the ability to propagate, rabbits are way ahead of man lol. Bacteria leave everyone behind.

But it terms of domination, it’s becomes another story. Or the ability to manipulate the environment; go to the moon; create music or art; invent algebra and on and on and on and on....

It’s basically a fact that man is unique amongst the other animals.

Every species is unique.

And did humans invent algebra or discover it?

The OP asked for civil discussion.
The usual suspects just couldn't to it. One thread out of thousands - and they just couldn't do it.

Can't help yourself, I guess. The premise is supposed to be a civil discussion. i don't think that tack you are on qualifies.

This is for you dishonest whiny asshats who hypocritically complain about civility from anyone who disagree with you; the civility left the forum on Post #8. Yet not a word from you two dishonest assholes.

STFU already. I grow weary of your dishonest whiny hypocritical bullshit on every fucking thread.

They are you, moron.

There is nothing civil or intellectual in a discussion about evoulution from a religious nut job.
You premise is based on savage first century magical thinking that requires a level of insanity to buy into.
You are hopelessly out of touch with reality.

I have a difficult time discussing anything with insane people. To believe in magical beings, as you do, requires a level of insanity that I am not willing to recognize as a viable alternative to rational thought.
In short , if you believe ancient supernatural events really happened, you have to be insane.

The pseudo intellectual melding of magic and reality in a discussion like this is contrary to civilized thought.
The principals can sound rational while giving credence to magical supernatural thinking if they choose their words carefully enough and tiptoe around the elephant in the room.
I insist that magical thinkers be willing to recognize that what they believe in requires a suspension of their ability to think rationality.
They can pretend to be rational within the minutiae of the discussion but the foundation of their premise is actually insane.
I won't let go of that fact.

You don't understand how science uses the word 'theory'.
Gravity is just a theory as well.
Please be less stupid.

No, it really isn't. Whales have songs. Dolphins have names for each other. All nurture their young. Some mammals are tool users.

We've been on the planet for a geological second.

And look at what we’ve accomplished in that geological second.

Why haven’t other mammals, that have been here longer, discovered music theory or invented the internal combustion engine or wrote treatise on Marxist theory—-where is the dolphin equivalent of Darwin lol!?

Why is it so hard for you to accept what is so obviously true?

Well, we like to believe this, anyways. It's pretty similar to Europeans coming to the western hemisphere and declaring that they were superior to the indigenous humans, or ancient Romans conquering territories in the British Isles and declaring themselves superior.

Sadly for the history of the planet as a whole, our innate belief that we're the top dogs has led to the wanton destruction of the environment and untold species.

What a pile of malarkey; please identify one other species on this planet that can invent machines to do work or think for them. I can wait.

He's a librul; libruls can't think, they emote. :rofl2:

I'm a scientist and a christian. How do you reconcile that? What you present is an utterly false dichotomy which I personally, as both someone educated in science and as a christian reject. They are not mutually incompatible belief systems.

I grew up in a community of scientists, most of whom were Christians. That was, of course 50+ years ago. My dad was a scientist and a Christian as well. I suspect though that Nordberg is correct and that most current scientists tend towards atheism. Just like American politics, Christianity has become polarized as well.

BTW, back then most of the scientists we knew were Republicans. I bet that is not true today, among current scientists.

You're forgetting about the ol' opposable thumb there, Darth.

How do you know whales & dolphins don't have musical theory, or art? And what's so great about the internal combustion engine?

If we make it a fraction as long as the dinosaurs, it will be a miracle. I think it's kind if interesting that you think we're "special" somehow. When the history of earth is written a few billion years from now, our reign will probably just be a blip.

Liberal loony land: Christians = BAD; Muslims = GOOD

And when humans become extinct there will be no one to consider what went on in the past. Do dolphins do paleontology?

Humans are unique amongst the other mammals. It astounding that I need to defend that *fact*. We aren’t talking opinion here.

It's not astounding when you consider the source. :rofl2:

Actually, all of the humans showed up suddenly, and inexplicably, in the fossil record.

Cro-Magnon and Neanderthal basically just appeared from seemingly nowhere and brought their cave art [and who knows what all, of one dares to question the conventional wisdom] with them.

No.

Besides I am not sure what that has to do with your blunder. We are clearly apes, just as clearly as we are primates, mammals, vertebrates and animals. Would you say something silly like "I struggle with the vertebrate-like to man jump."

It's quite possible that we may prove to be entirely too clever for long-term survival. You only have to look at the huge island-sized masses of plastics and other debris in our seas, what we've done to our inland fresh water lakes that renders them undrinkable, patches of Earth so polluted that living there would kill us, etc. We have taken some strides in the northern hemisphere to clean the air and water, but of course in the U.S. one particular party is working OT to try to abolish many of the environmental regulations. Even if the (R)s weren't bent at business-at-any-cost, can we overcome all the toxins being poured onto the planet, into the atmosphere, and into the seas by other countries?

Call me a tree-hugger (please do, really) -- but I would rather have whale song, then the "convenience" of a plastic water bottle produced in a factory destroying our planet, by our self-anointed superior species.

There is no Planet B, eh.

No.

I thought about mentioning Mitochondrial Eve, but it's patently obvious that we are preaching to the church mouse here rather than to the choir.
