The Republicans carried four southern states in 1964.
Five actually...but let's do four.
Alabama cast its electoral votes for a Republican in 1964 for the first time in 90 years.
Georgia cast its electoral votes for a Republican in 1964 for the first time in 96 years.
Mississippi cast its electoral votes for a Republican in 1964 for the first time in 90 years.
South Carolina cast its electoral votes for a Republican in 1964 for the first time in 84 years.
And the South has been fairly solid for the Republicans (with the exception of going for Strom Thurmond, and the two Southern Democrats, Carter and Clinton.)
My point has been made.
