Alabama Has The Worst Poverty In The Developed World

Yes, I agree that there are different reasons that various people are in poverty, absolutely. I also agree that a one-size-fits-all approach isn't efficient or particularly helpful.

For instance, the one group you mentioned that for whatever reason (mental illness, mental and/or physical abilities) will probably never be self-sufficient. We might as well face that fact, and offer them enough to keep them fed, healthy, sheltered.

How do you do that, though, when you have people like the current crop of conservatives insisting that they're "slackers," "moochers," "looters," etc.? -- And who control the National Wallet?

We made a national effort as a country with the War on Poverty starting in the mid '60's. What would you say the results have been and if you could change any of it what would it be?

See BAC I don't deny there are racists in the Republican Party. Never have. But any racist in the Democratic Party you defend. Because politics matter more than anything else to you. It's your God.

And you are still lying about the meme.

I don't give a fuck about what a cowardly right-winger claims I'm lying about.

There aren't just 'some' racists in your virtually all white party .. it's full of them.

Do us a favor and just run the fuck away.

LBJ's Great Society substantially reduced poverty, even drastically reduced poverty among seniors. The poverty rate prior to the mid 1960s was somewhere around 25 percent. By any objective measure the Great Society was a success - and for a government program, remarkably successful - although it did not wipe poverty out.

Instead of asking my what I would do (I mean who give a shit about my opinion, I am not a policy expert), why not look to countries where abject poverty is virtually absent. If you are genuinely interested in answers, why not ask what the Swedes, Germans, and French have done to virtually eliminate abject poverty. It is not a theoretical question - there are countries that have actually done this.

Particularly for seniors, it was quite effective.

At some point in time intact families were penalized for being intact; I don't know if this is still the case or not. If it is, that needs to go. People will rise out of poverty much faster if the parents are enabled by society to stay together with the kids, and work together. If that means we have to temporarily subsidize daycare for any small children, I'm good with that. Jobs training and jobs-finding programs are a necessity. I think one issue with this is the number of fathers (and some mothers as well) who have criminal records. It's extremely difficult for them to find decent paying work. What do we do with them?

We've already made "welfare" a temporary thing; there are requirements to find work.

Have you noticed in discussions of this sort how when these countries are pointed out, there is often an immediate outraged scream about socialism and who gives a flying f what those commies do over there? I'm not saying that anyone *here* is currently saying that, but it is quite common.

I am saying NY is a high tax state. They have squalor. MA is a high tax state. They have squalor. That shows being from a high tax state does not stop it.
You cited NYC for some reason? So MA has areas with raw sewage running into the streets, and does nothing about it?

Yes.

Whenever a liberal brings up Sweden, Norway, France, et al. almost all conservatives I have run across immediately start hollering "But, socialism!"

Republican Poverty: 93 Of The Poorest 100 Counties In America Are In Red States

I addressed this back in 2015 here on this site when I read this from YOUR RACIST PARTY .. which led me on a search for the truth which I posted then .. without the need for Politfact.

What a fucking coward and clown you are.

I don't give a fuck where you go .. just go post to your own kind .. republican morons.

Take it a step further. Typical 'conservative' policies, like pushing coal plants, have polluted every body of water in the Northeast with mercury. What was previously undiagnosed, is now being recognized as autism in a growing percentage of children. There's a correlation between the two.

Pushing Big Pharma to increase profits/dividends by bribing doctors to prescribe unnecessary pain meds, has brought us an opioid epidemic.

Short term, nearsighted gains are always followed by a disaster to society. That's when we hear about the 'lazy', 'takers', etc. from Republican lawmakers.

I think they would have a lot more credibility if they would thoughtfully point out the differences between those nations, and the United States, and I don't mean the political system entirely.

One difference that really stands out to me has to do with how Europe is configured versus how the U.S. is. European countries are small (landmass/population) in comparison with the U.S. A majority of Europeans speak more than one language, and have traveled outside of their own country to at least neighboring countries. I think that this alone gives the average European more of a wider world view than the average American, who speaks only English and has never left our borders. Learning another language and visiting other countries tends to open your mind to how you personally are perceived by others... not just as an individual but as a representative of your beloved country. Remember way back when wealthy American families used to send their children abroad to "widen their horizons"?

I've noticed over my many years on political discussion boards that the most open-minded, liberal, people tend to be those who have spent time overseas, but not just stuck on a military base or being shot at and exploded in a war.

We can join those countries when we stop putting our military escapades over social benefits. But...our gluttonous demand for oil dictates our foreign policy.

Yes BAC, I'm a coward and a clown because a meme that says 97 of the poorest 100 counties was based on whether they voted for Mitt Romney or not, NOT that Republicans governed the area as you claimed.

Yes BAC, I am a coward and a clown because you don't understand how rural and urban poverty is calculated among counties.

Yes BAC, I'm a clown because someone at The Root called the Democratic Party racist.

You're a coward and a clown because you ran like a thief from answering a simple question that you knew would reflect badly on your stupid ass claim.

Politifact was just the latest to confirm what I already knew .. which has also been confirmed by other sources.

NOW .. are we done? I'm really tired of talking to your dumb ass.

Yes.

In the Drmocratic primary even Hillary Clinton said to Bernie Sanders "we are not Norway."

Let those countries pay their "fair share" of military expenditures and not rely on the U.S. and let's see how they do.

I'll could be generous and just say you were wrong, lord knows I've been wrong more than I care to count. But you continued with it so we're knowing lying about your claim. Now you've thrown a fit

Good points.
I get the impression a lot of rightwingers believe learning from other countries is a sign of weakness.
I think we could learn a lot from Europeans, as well as others while at the same time recognizing the differences inherent in the United States.

At the same time, I will keep an open mind about what we could learn about from socially conservative, traditionalist, and religiously conservative countries. I'm all ears if a conservative wants to explain what we could learn from Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, or Somalia.

It has seemed to me in my lifetime that our human ability to look ahead and measure cause and effect has dwindled -- or been stifled. Out our front windows we see Kichi-gami (Lake Superior) every day, bar the fogs/rains/snows. It's not as polluted as our Great Lakes further East, but it too contains mercury. We are cautioned even up here in the UP not to eat certain fish caught from inland lakes if we are a child or mother who is or might become pregnant. Within an hour's drive of here are breathtaking lakes surrounded by low mountains covered with firs. The lakes are poison because of mine tailings.

The takers, the looters, the moochers are those who have raped and pillaged our planet.
