Exactly. And plenty of ports on the east coast within a two day steam. Shipping containers after a while have to be taken out of use because of structural integrity. All that means is they cannot meet the gwt of the cargo being shipped anymore. They are still extremely strong, this is really for insurance reasons. There are literally 100's of thousands of them worldwide that can be picked up for pennies on the dollar cost.

Give one to each family, size dependent on how much land they own, with the stipulation that they refurbish it themselves.
I'd bet that a family that's able to construct a shack, out of scrap, would have the ability to make the transformation.

Some people are burying them as storm shelters, cellars, and such.

Of course the sides need reinforced; because they're not made to take much pressure from the sides.

They could be used as single containers, placed side to side, or end to end, and even for a two story home.

Hell, place two or three side to side and then stack another two or three on top.
