Statue Of Racist Leader Taken Down In New Orleans

Since when did democracy become authoritarian? On the other hand, wouldn't you call the flying of an enemy nation's flag on American soil a sign of authoritarianism?

When you don't like the results of democracy and go against the will of the people.

The mayor is both anti-democractic and illiberal. The latter trait is a common malady amongst modern day 'liberals'.

A true liberal would advocate leaving the people of NO alone---they should be allowed to keep their monuments without a minority of moral busybodies dictating their removal.

The majority of the people of New Orleans are Black .. and they want that nasty bullshit removed.

I agree with you .. you should leave the people of New Orleans alone.

The survey showed that an astounding 73% of Louisiana residents support the monuments remaining, whereas only 20% favor removing them. Even though New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu claimed that the monuments were an affront to African Americans, the poll showed a different result. Among African American residents, there was more support for keeping the monuments at 47% than for their removal, which only registered 40% support.

With this kind of massive support, it is truly ludicrous that Landrieu has made the removal of Confederate monuments such a signature issue. It is unpopular even in New Orleans as it surely played a role in his property tax measure being defeated on April 9. It is also a reason why his approval rating has dropped in the past year.

Anti-democratic policies make for bad politics. Apparently, Landrieu is a typical out of touch liberal politician.

This isn't about what Louisiana wants .. it's about what the people of New Orleans want in their city.

The majority-black City Council in 2015 voted 6 to 1 to approve plans to take the statues down, but legal battles over their fate have prevented the removal until now, said Landrieu, who proposed the monuments' removal and rode to victory twice with overwhelming support from the city's black residents.

Taking down those filthy statues was a major campaign issue .. and as you can see .. removal won overwhelmingly.

Leave the people of New Orleans alone. They don't want that bullshit in their city.

I can see you don't like the poll numbers lol.

The City Council is out of step with their constituents.

Was the mayor undemocratically elected?

AGAIN:
68% of NO residents oppose removing the monuments. The poll was done by a local TV station and included 800 respondents. Only 19% were in favor of removing them.

I thought you guys were big fans of the popular vote lol?

Like I said, this is really bad politics. But I think democrats should be encouraged to take their cultural purge to the next level and go national with it.

Oddly enough your link seems to say it was a local tv doing a statewide??

According to the statewide telephone poll of 800 registered voters, conducted for WWL-TV and The Advocate by Clarus Research Group, an overwhelming 68 percent of the voters surveyed said they oppose the renaming or removal of Confederate monuments

Why should the statue of a vanquished foe exist in the USA, unless it depicts a sword at his throat or surrender papers being signed? It's like having a fucking Hirohito memorial on the mall.:palm:

That would be up to the residents of New Orleans to decide, would it not?

Why aren't you taking your own advice to leave New Orleans residents alone?

.. and no, I don't trust your survey .. so I went to a much better benchmark, the elected representatives.

Check this out ...

New Orleans Mayor Wins Re-Election In A Landslide

Landrieu came close to matching his impressive victory of four years ago. He won 66 percent of the vote over 10 opponents in 2010, becoming the first white mayor of majority black New Orleans since his father, Moon Landrieu, left office in the '70s.

All of the candidates in both races were Democrats.

Landrieu also said he has taken unprecedented steps to bring a diverse city together, including hundreds of meetings around the city. Those have included public hearings in each City Council district that helped lead to consensus on how to cut a budget deficit once estimated at $80 million.

Quite obviously the person out of step here is you. No disrespect intended, but you're way out of step with the residents of New Orleans.

Just curious, but why would you believe that black people would want to preserve American vestiges of pure evil?

Why do 47% of Louisiana blacks oppose removing the monuments in that poll you don't like lol? Is there something wrong with them?

Landrieu won reelection in 2014...before he began his crusade. Yes, the City Council voted for it and some advocacy groups are behind it, but that doesn't make it democratic or popular.

Yep... Seems pretty obvious doesn't it??
