Illogical Hillary demands all schools be above average!!!!

Get excited when they allow them to compete. Taking an average of crappy public schools and closing some won't improve education if you just fill the gap with newly minted crappy public schools with the same teachers and philosophy.

We need to go to private schools with a profit incentive to do a good job. As it is schools are just day care for the kids and welfare for the teachers.

Maybe I was assuming too much in her statement but I'd figured closing public schools would be reopened as charter schools (which is what often happens now) thus a higher quality of educational opportunity for those kids.

Charter schools still get public funding which makes them govt schools and govt can't do anything right.

That's just a facile comment. There are some excellent public schools however there are many that need changing.

Hence the competition angle. It works well in other nations and improves the schools using human nature. Parents send their kids to the school that will do best for them rather than to the government monopoly because that's all they can do. Sometimes the public school will win, sometimes even the government hires somebody who does a good job.

LR, excuse my ignorance on this but why would this not work? (not suggesting it should but curious to hear your feedback)

Take for instance the county where I live. Typical of about 60-65 out of our 77 counties. First, there are no facilities to handle the type of student population one school would have. To build the facilities would cost millions that our state doesn't have. Secondly, this county is over 1600 square miles. Bussing would be a nightmare. In the district where I work we have kids on the bus for an hour and a half. Kids in ages ranging from 3 - 17. How long is too long? When does the bus ride adversely affect a kid's ability to be efficient in the classroom once they get to school? I can easily see bus rides approaching 2 hour or more to a centralized school location. This type of proposal has been looked at before and there is nothing good in such a bill for the students and the savings in tax dollars is minimal at best, break even at worst. That's what I have in a nutshell. It would work for some counties but not for the overwhelming majority of them.

I completely agree with you on the need for competition among schools.

Gotcha, thanks. What's this legislator thinking?

LR, completely unrelated question for since you are here. You consider yourself a blue dog/conservative Democrat. Looking up the definition of a conservative Democrat I've seen it both described as one who is a conservative and one who is conservative compared to the normal Democrat. How do you define it yourself?

The impetus for this was a dispute I had with Zappa. He started a thread ripping on a rightie. Well it turned out this rightie was a Democratic Mayor who was a blue dog Democrat. When someone uses the term rightie it's generally thought to be a Republican or conservative. If someone called you a rightie would you consider that accurate?

I guess I was figuring new schools would open in the place of the one's being closed. Maybe I'm just lost in the excitement of a national Democratic politician openly saying they'd be willing to close poor performing schools.

Hillary herself probably got lost in that excitement.......the minute the teacher's union points that out to her she will deny she ever said it.......

I see myself as socially conservative and fiscally moderate. I absolutely believe in SS and, to some extent, helping the poor with health care. Of course I am pro public education but I think there needs to be better options in place for weeding out bad teachers and improving schools. I am politically ambidextrous I guess. I am way right of center socially and center to center left on fiscal issues.

its called paying the teachers more so you can get better individual teachers.

starving the Gov so it cant pay people is really fucking stupid

nope we dont you fucking asshole

when we had the best schools in the world we did spend on them you shit guzzling fucktard

we spend more on education than almost everyone......but then you probably aren't sober enough to realize that....not only that, but some of the worst schools in the country are the schools where we spend the most......

when we had the best schools in the world they were segregated and didn't spend a bunch of money on English learners. Interesting to see Desh wants to go back to that
