disability insurance fraud 60 minutes

How was this possible if the people were unemployed, poor? Do they take a portion of their monthly check? Did they state what the average monthly amount being rewarded or disability? I didn't see the program and I am trying to understand how lawyers would profit.

From the program which annata copied in her first two posts:

"Last year the Social Security Administration paid a billion dollars to claimants' lawyers out of its cash-strapped disability trust fund."

The same thing all trial lawyers get, a percentage of the outcome.

I will try to obtain a transcription the program, being that disability is not paid out in a lump sum, there must be a fee and they must have to pay a monthly amount.

Fascinating, you Bloviate on the topic without first reading the article and then groan my posts when it is pointed out; pathetic.

All I know, from what I have seen friends go through, it took my vet friend three years to get disability, many doctors exams and mountains of paperwork, he received disability, PTSD.

My other friend with seizures did not.

It isn't just a stroll into an office, fill out a form and get a check.

I know there are many who claim back injuries and probably could work, but there are one with genuine back injuries that truly are disabled by their injuries.

I agree.

Two of my friends used a company to help them handle the disability process. The company took a percentage of the back disability pay up to a certain maximum amount (about $5000 or so)

So if it took you a few years to get on disability - which gets back-dated to when you first applied - the company maxes out the amount; otherwise it's a smaller amount. There are rules and regs around how much they can take.

No, I found the answers I needed on the Social Security site, I just mistakenly thought since you saw the program you could answer the questions, sorry to bother you.

I was trying to answer. I hope my tone didn't come across as combative or negative because that wasn't my intent.

Thank you! I found this on the SS site. I just thought the person who watched the program could answer.

My friend with seizures needs disability. He can not get a job or keep one because of his seizures. His family members supply his rent and food, but they need help with his medications which are ungodly.

And in a ten minute segment they can only get into so much detail. They didn't break down whether the lawyers get their fee all at once after winning the case or whether its paid out over time. The emphasis was more on that a billion dollars was paid to lawyers last year from the fund and was clearly lucrative enough that more and more lawyers are trying to get involved (and not in a good way).

Bad reporting then, they didn't cover all the "w's".

How and why are these lawyers being paid. I am not the type that just accepts the fact they are getting this money, I want to know why they are getting the money and how they are getting it.
