Dude.... I was in the military. Granted, it was in the early 80's...on base housing was free, and food in the chow halls were also free. Your original issued clothing was free and they gave a clothing allowance for items that needed replaced.

Yeah, no. Base housing if you're married cost whatever BAH was. If you stayed in the barracks it was $53. Chow hall cost....$292 (back in 09 anyways). Original issue now costs whatever it would be otherwise. Clothing allowance was once a year and, if I recall correctly, less than $100 (which was the price of one uniform, not counting name tapes). Oh and the $92 you pay for TRICARE a month.

They even had on base housing for married people with kids....they were like small ranch style homes and it didn't cost anything.
The costs you describe aren't that bad compared to real world COL....but it's the principle of the whole thing.

Well, I won't get into personal issues....I'll leave that to my right wing extremist brethren they are very good at personal attacks. But until we realize that social safety nets aren't there to "help" the working poor as much as they are to pad the profits of those who really don't need help? Then the whole thing is an exercise in futility.
We pay...when you include subsidation...about $14/ gallon of gas. It's just that we only see the $3.?? at the pump. That's a other of my pet peeved...but when anyone considers a clean and different way, it's like the sky is falling. All hail the corporate Lobbyist.
