This CDC link from last October predicts a $16T cost for the pandemic. $4.4T for premature deaths alone.
https://www.cdc.gov/library/covid19/102320_covidupdate.html
- Total economic cost of US pandemic through Fall, 2021 estimated at $16 trillion or 90% of the gross domestic product (GDP).
Cumulative deaths estimated at 625,000 yielding $4.4 trillion in losses for premature death.
[*]Losses from long-term COVID-19 complications estimated at $2.6 trillion.
[*]Losses for mental health symptoms estimated at $1.6 trillion.
[*]Lost economic output estimated at $7.6 trillion over 20 years.- Lost income from COVID-19-induced recession accounts for 50% of total losses.
- The economic return on investment of a SARS-CoV-2 testing and contact tracing program was estimated at 30 times the cost.
Yes, still high.Wow.
That's just staggering.
But one question. 90% of GDP?
That doesn't seem right. I thought our GDP was higher than that.
US Debt Clock lists the GDP at 21T
If the COVID losses amounted to 16T, that would be 16/21 = .76
.76 x 100% = 76% of GDP.
Still alarmingly high, either way.
Looks like the number of Critical and Serious cases has stopped falling.
It crept back above 28,000.
This new strain of the virus is scary, 70% more contagious. I can’t wait to get vaccinated.I always treat the Monday stats with some skepticism. Some of the states don't report over the weekend (Michigan is one of them) so Monday's stats may or may not reflect that. Even so, it's still very bad. Let's hope that schools letting out for the holidays will help, and that ppl refrain from parties and get-togethers for just a little while longer.
One hopeful thing: We were discussing the vaccine on social media over the weekend. Apparently there is some evidence that despite stringent adherence to PPE protocols, a good number of health care workers have developed antibodies to the virus w/o having suffered an acute infection. Wash U in St. Louis and the CDC have launched a study to determine just how many, percentagewise. If it turns out that most have antibodies, it seems logical to assume that tiny exposures over time can do the same thing that the vaccine will do. It also may mean that immunity doesn't wane over time, as well.

Yes! But, we are deviating from CDC guidelines, because “we’re Texas”You know it's already here. Probably like last spring, it'll hit NYC and Seattle the hardest at first. What's the vax priority for citizens in Texas? Healthcare workers and SNF residents/staff first?
Yes! But, we are deviating from CDC guidelines, because “we’re Texas”
I would rather see teachers and first responders get the vaccine.

Texas says it will concentrate on people 65 years and older, and those with certain chronic conditions.

Shut up, Steven. The CDC before Trump was one of the most respected agencies in the world and it will return to that status, once again, under Biden. The CDC has been a disaster in so many ways.....listen to them at your own risk.

Your lame and uninformed opinion. They had the reputation but they have not deserved that reputation for many years....the CDC was wrecked and no one noticed....or at least no one spoke up.
And fuck you.
