A good point. The obvious question is "Why?"
My answer is "follow the money". We're a consumerist society with the vast majority of our values based on money. Trump epitomizes that philosophy. Even most Christians are worshiping money over traditional Christian values which is why "Prosperity Christianity" is such a big hit among the Evangelicals.
The Biblical quote 1 Timothy 6:10 is best known in the US but many ancient cultures have proverbs about the placement of material wealth over everything else.
For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.
Always do what you say you are going to do. A good name is better than riches.
A fool and his money are soon parted.
And as for money—Don’t you remember the old saying, “Enough is as good as a feast?” Money never made a man happy yet, nor will it. There is nothing in its nature to produce happiness. The more a man has, the more he wants. Instead of its filling a vacuum, it makes one. If it satisfies one want, it doubles and trebles that want another way. That was a true proverb of the wise man, rely upon it: “Better is little with the fear of the Lord than great treasure, and trouble therewith.”
Benjamin Franklin.
