Sadly, I don't think a bullet in Putin's head will lead to democracy. Putin has had 20 years to infect Russian leadership with corrupt oligarchs, and another oligarch will just take his place. We could always hope it is a more reasonable oligarch.

I think it is probably a long term project to get Russia back to where it was 20 years ago, a viable multi-party parliamentary system, a free press, incipient democratic institutions, a society that honors civil democratic engagement.

I see 'pro-Putin Republicans' liking Putin because of his 'pro-traditional Family Values' and hating Democrats because of their secular multi-cultural position.
It's a tough position for 'pro-Putin Republicans' to be in.

I don't think it's quite that bad. Putin was ideally trained to become what he became. His background specialty in the KGB was propaganda. Who else is going to be as ruthless and skilled as he? If he is ousted and Nalvany is freed, Nalvany could become the next Russian leader. He would go a long way to route out corruption very quickly.

Agreed. Now every object in a road could be an IED and every window a sniper waiting to pick off the Officers and NCOs....usually identified by being the ones giving hand signals, verbal commands or often in the center of the group. In a column of vehicles, the #2 and last vehicle often holds the officers and NCOs, respectively.

All of this and more done in a year by this president.
