If you are a business owner, you pay BOTH sides of Social Security taxes, and BOTH sides of Medicare/Medicaid taxes.
If you have employees, you also pay ONE side of these taxes while they pay the other through their paycheck deductions.

You only pay FICA if you have employees and are paying the business half of that which matches the employee deduction. As an owner, or as someone who is say, an investor or otherwise gets your money from some means other than a W-2, paying FICA is optional and you have to do it yourself.

Thus, your federal tax burden falls by about 50% since FICA makes up about half of what you pay.

For example, I work doing electrical work and use a 1099 to pay the federal taxes required. I pay no FICA. So long as that is the case it doesn't count as income against social security or Medicare and those benefits don't get reduced as a result. People who get a job after taking social security and are on a W-2 face a very low wage cap before they start losing benefits.

Same goes for investments in say real estate, stocks, mineral rights royalties, etc. Those don't count for FICA and I can pay on a 1099.

How is your business organized?
If an LLC, what is your paycheck to yourself? If you take all of it, then the LLC veil is pierced and you may own a tremendous amount in back taxes.

The 1099 still has to get reported on your income taxes. It is not a replacement form for income taxes.
