It's kind of amusing here to see signs in Lowe's in both English and Spanish. We have all of two Mexican restaurants and probably less than 100 Hispanic residents in town. Canada is only 100 miles away but nothing is in French One of my girls lives in Vermont within a 45 min. drive to the Canadian border. No French there, either.

We used to live in a far more diverse area. Always loved hearing people speaking in their native languages when we were out and about. That seems to enrage rightwingers for some reason. I see it as an illustration of what a wonderful, welcoming country America is. My own grandmother didn't speak English until she was in grade school; they came here from Switzerland.

Back in the day when immigrants came to America, it was for a better life for themselves and their families...first priority was to learn English through your kids who got a free education from America's schools. Today however, with so many business's seeking cheap labor, nobody has been incentivized to learn the culture or English, today its all about making American money. I'm all about the diversity and engaging with other cultures, that's a personal investment we sometimes indulge....but I find it insulting and fucked up, that my grandkids will have to compete in a bilingual world with Latino's who are privy to both worlds and language in the United States of America???? How fucked up is that? Spanish dominates this country landscape and I for one am not happy about it. I'm sick of seeing jobs saying Bilingual is a plus, sick of it. I defy anyone to move to other countries and expect them to accomidate your lack of knowledge of their language. Visit China, Japan, France and even Mexico pass the tourist industry, EVERYTHING IS IN THEIR LANGUAGE AND RIGHTLY SO.

Nothing. But later generations wonder if they lost some of their heritage. Do you agree that it was okay to forcibly remove Native American kids from their homes, park them in residential schools, and strip them of the language, religion, culture and force them to be "Americans"?

IMO if I were to move to another non-English-speaking country for any length of time, I would expect myself to learn enough of the language to be able to communicate and to better appreciate their culture. I don't see any reason why someone coming here shouldn't do the same. They will feel more at home and part of things.
