If they don't then what's the point of this thread? Both parties have fielded lily-white candidates for centuries.

I agree. I think most have the unrealistic belief the "party establishment" controls the nomination. Party power is very decentralized and the presidential primary and caucus voters (although a very small number) will determine who gets the nomination. Although we saw efforts by the DNC to help Hillary in 2016 it didn't change the results (she still got far more primary votes).
