Racism was definitely not dying in the South, and Nixon ran a racist campaign:

It was a Dixiecrat platform.

The White Libs wanted to flood the Black community with Heroin. Democrats were pro Vietnam war. LBJ had a democrat dominated House and Senate.

But I am an ex-bartender...and we bartenders had a code. Any woman who hadn't managed to connect during open hours but who wanted to do the deed...we felt an obligation to take on.
I can tell you there were times when beer and a bartender's great imagination were not enough!
They were an ordeal, but we saw our duty and did it.
Reading is hard for you. No one was flooding any community with heroin. The "War on Drugs" was racist and it was the centerpiece of Nixon's 1968 campaign, as his domestic policy adviser said in what I quoted.
