Why Can't This Be Done?

I won't deny that there is an influential group (but they're not a class, are they? Not in the traditional sense), or that they have their own best interests at heart. Their best interests are to keep us as a mass placated or otherwise occupied. I simply do not believe that their overthrow would be worth the effort. New ones would rise in their place, and a more . . . stable, centralized, authoritarian government in its stead. We I survive fine on our current system, better than I would as a commie.

Maybe I am off-track here, though. Tell me what freedoms I lost, ones that were irrefutable?

Tell me, how would communism deal with the poor, lazy, unemployable, the sick, the skill-less, those of menial capability?

The list of freedoms you THINK you have but dont have is long. The freedom you convince yourselves of is the same freedom that most other countries have. Are you free to walk about in the city at night? Are you free to travel anywhere without being searched? Are you free to be black in your southern states?
I do not know what 'commies' would do, but I do know that investment in education (not only schooling) will take most people out of lazy, a lot of people out of poor. There is always employment for the skille-less but because of what they are the system will not pay them out of poverty. The US is pretty screwed up and you have a long way to go. You must stop being a drug culture, you must stop being the world centre of porn (neither generate extra wealth) You must introduce huge amounts of good schools with dedicated teachers...yes you can...other places do it. You need to stop your population being polarised so all people can discuss sensibly. And you must stop hating each other.

There would be some issues in the larger cities. You're right in that regard. But they don't have to stay.

Also, I made a mistake in my post. I meant to write "While not an anarchist communist myself..."

during my hippie years, i was referred to as a "dirty commie anarchist'...some people really hate, but usually due to fear

bummer

What the heck is a "wage slave"? For almost 40 years, I have had a job for which I have been paid a wage. The alternatives? I go all Grizzly Adams and move to the woods, or maybe a life of crime. How about I sit on my ass and pontificate about the evils of capitalism and the drudgery of work while waiting for the government to feed, clothe and shelter me?

during one of our economic down turns i worked at minimum wage, i much preferred my usual job as a senior software engineer, but i had a family to support

eventually, i went back to my usual job and was happier, but i have never forgotten those who worked with me as temporary workers at minimum wage

they are a class and a rather selfish one at that

they, of course, wish to perpetuate themselves

please note that i do not lump all of the wealthy in that class

the class is comprised mainly of inherited money and power

as for freedoms lost, try the usa patriot act for starters...that and the governments monitoring of our emails and other telecommunications

Communism changes the nature of work - everyone has something to contribute and consume, to give and take - so they do. The sick, disable and elderly would be cared for and contribute what they can. The unemployable would not exist. The lazy would contribute to survive.
