Man shoots himself while breaking into house, dies


DALLAS (AP) -- Police in a Dallas suburb say a man trying to rob a house accidentally shot himself after kicking down the door and died in the driveway.

Grand Prairie police say the body of 19-year-old Cameron Sands was found outside the house early Tuesday.

Police Lt. John Brimmer says the evidence indicates Sands shot himself while trying to pull the gun from his waistband. He then dropped the gun and ran until he collapsed.

Sands was wounded in the stomach. The medical examiner's office has ruled his death accidental.

Yes, but think of the greater waste had someone been home and been shot by this 19 year old?

This is sad, but its not as sad as it could have been.
 
Who the hell gets tooled up for a bloody housebreak? What was he going to do if he bumped into a householder - shoot them? Jeez you folks in the States have seriously bad housebreakers.

Everyone in America has guns in their home, and the ironic effect of that is that criminals coming into homes usually come in with guns themselves. The criminal does obviously have a natural advantage of not being just woken up and groggy, but don't tell the gun nuts this. They're uber-awesome gunslingers who sleep with one eye open.

Well Watermark, having a gun in my house lets me save the court's money on a trial.

Yes, if they break in while I am asleep they will have a few seconds advantage. But unless they break into thru my bedroom, the advantage doesn't mean much. Then they are in a dark house that is totally unfamiliar to them. Whereas, I am at home. So they end up ruining my carpets and I end up making a phone call for the sheriff to come retrieve a body.

Let me be clear, I do not want to kill anyone. But someone who breaks into my home is going to get shot. And I am not going to be stupid and try and wound them like you see in the movies.

Death is not a joke or a game. But protecting my family, myself, and my home is not a game either.

Me .. I've got a dog .. it's not possible to even be outside of my house without me knowing that you're there .. and the would-be burglar knowing that I know he's there. They will simply go somewhere else .. where there is no dog .. even a little one.

Avantage: Dog.

A dog is an excellent alarm. Even when the power goes out they work like a charm.

Yes they do. They come equipped with sensory superpowers and are the best burglar alarm one can possibly have .. far better than a gun .. and they won't shoot your kids.

Guns are far better for deterring crime.

Well if you have children around you're supposed to keep it locked up. I mean, seriously, it just becomes a bit ridiculous to think you could stop one coming in while your asleep. But burglars these days usually scout the home to find out whenever no ones home and come in then, so a gun would be useless.

America actually has low burglary rates compared to gun control nations. Without the mass of brutal killings we'd be A-OK. Guess you've gotta make tradeoffs somewhere. :cof1:
