I did not mention party, though it is abundantly clear from all polling that resentment and suspicion of higher education finds safe harbor in the GOP more than elsewhere.

A 2012 GOP presidential debate, three Republican candidates for president raised their hand in the affirmative when asked if any candidate doubted evolution.

Those were people running to be leader of the free world. How deep does ignorance run in the garden variety GOP base?

An electrician or butcher can certainly be intelligent, interesting, and well read. There are people without university degrees who can discuss the elementary principles of biology and physics and have read classic world literature.

Those people have dignity and active minds.

But they do not strike me as the beady-eyed, slack-jawed rubes who show up at Trump rallies to adore their Orange Demigod.

"Deplorables" claim to be against the Republican establishment, and many of them have claimed to be "former Obama voters".

You can let me know if they were actually lying,
