You have good taste in music!
Political repression and human suffering often seem to be fertile ground in which art, poetry, and literature really transcend normal convention.
In the USSR, and particularly the Stalinist era, people like Shostakovich, Anna Akhmatova, Solzhenitsyn et al. reached such a transcendent apogee of creativity, that I really do not think there is an equivalent in in the United States, or even most of western Europe, in my opinion.
p.s. I still have a soft spot for Tchaikovsky
