I do not know why conservatives think that their form of religion/Christianity is supirior, or why it warrants state endorsement. I mean, Carter was a much more Christan man than Reagan, as Reagan seldom went to church and was not all that personally religious.

For the same reason many atheists on the left think their views are superior (thus they constantly demean those that show opposing views)... both sets are intolerant of people who don't think exactly like them. Note, it is generally a minority of each mindset, not the majority by any means.
