Have you been upset by other movies that changed things but had the same name?

Did you care that Disney's first 'Little Mermaid' significantly changed the story from Hans Chrsitian Anderson's book?

No. They selected an incredibly talented up and coming black actress and singer (she is a songwriter as well) to play the role. She is a protege of Beyonce, who, btw, voiced the adult Nala. Replacing a white voice actor in the original. OMFG, that movie was woke too. Damn, I didn't realize that until now :)

I'm not too crushed. But yep, when you see a movie, you say something like 'I saw it the first day it came out with my grandkids'. Or 'my wife and I went to see it and we both loved it'. She has 'hinted'. But the complaint about the ending gives her away. I know because.... well..... I saw it.

As for the other idiot, he hasn't seen it either, but his default position is that a white actress was the best person for the role. Which is, of course, racist on it's face. The idea that they WANTED Halle Bailey for the role never crossed his mind. It's not rocket science. BTW, the audience score for them movie is 94%,. Critics who didn't like it aren't complaining about woke, and most agree that Halle Bailey is fantastic. In fact, a number of critics don't like it because it is STILL sexist in it's premise. In other words, not woke enough.

This whole thing is just galactically stupid, but it is a reflection of our times. Tweak any of these people, and it doesn't take long for the racist to pop up or the transphobe to reveal themselves. In some cases, it's both.

I've seen the movie as well as the 1989 animated classic.

I didn't notice anything radically and substantively different about them

Girl meets boy --> girl loses boy --> girl wins boy back.
 
Clooney and Pitt's Ocean's Eleven wasn't even similar to the Rat Pack version of 1959.

Seeing the original was one of the formative moments of my life--at an impressionable age, I witnessed the concept of "cool"
that would serve me through all of my days.

The 2001 version was two hours of light entertainment that I still enjoyed, but no epiphanies were to be experienced.
I was already too old for epiphanies, anyway.

Just as I enjoyed the two very different films at two very different levels,
I would imagine that the same could happen with the Mermaid vehicles.
Not being especially familiar with so-called "family entertainment," however, it's not for me to say.

It is definitely both with the "teacher" complaining about how a movie she never saw was ruined by "woke."

The opinion of someone like yourself who has seen both versions and is able to articulate the similarities and differences is far more valuable than the rote repetition of what some alt-Reichwing hatchet man/woman has to say about it.

White girl with flowing red hair in original is cast in remake as black girl with flowing dark hair seems to be the main difference, along with more sensitivity about female characters needing to be saved by some prince charming. People who haven't seen both probably should quit crying about how the 2nd one is "ruined by woke."

My sense from both movies is that Ariel, first and foremost, wanted to live in the human world. Falling in love with the prince was incidental to that.

When I watched the movie it didn't even occur to me people would be upset about a black actress playing Ariel.

As far as I can tell, with a long term trend of globalization and changing demographics, it's quite natural to expect a slightly browner tone in government, business, advertising, and entertainment

Her hair is red tinted in the movie. Ursula even calls her 'red'. Yes, there were minor, and I mean MINOR tweaks to song lyrics to reflect the changes in attitudes towards women in the decades since the original was made. Oh, boo hoo hoo.

Completely agree. They are looking for a reason to be outraged. They are looking for a boogeyman. Because they are bereft of any thoughts or any ideas, and they have become hopelessly lazy and entitled. They need someone to blame for their lot in life, and they REFUSE to blame the rich guys who are taking money out of their wallets, and they refuse to blame themselves.
