We Should Offer Friendship And Forgiveness To Trump Supporters Without Shaming

They have been betrayed.

We should welcome them back to considerate society.

They must feel foolish for having been taken in.

We should comfort them, and let them know we are happy to be their fellow Americans, and we have had their back the whole time, even if the President has let them down.

Anybody can make a mistake.

PoliTalker anti-troll thread thief disclaimer:

Most Trump supporters never thought he was a good choice for the job. They simply believed that Trump wouldn't be as bad as Hillary.

So what? They were influenced by strong propaganda. They're only human.

Welcome back to caring America, ex-Trump supporters!

1. I was not a Trump supporter and have not voted for a repub for president since Bob Dole
2. I support about half of standard democrat positions yet because I oppose or don't care about the other half you people consider me a white supremacist neo nazi trumpster.
3. Because of this I do not trust you. At all.
4. Because of this you people have forced me to strongly consider voting for trump in 2020.
5. Congratulations.

Hello Darth,

Ripping the nation apart lol?

I haven’t seen any riots since Obama left office.

Yes, the nation has been ripped apart by President Trump. And it is no laughing matter. He is beneath the dignity appropriate for the office of President of the USA. He insults people. He causes hurt. He is inconsiderate of others. He is a divider. He is ripping the nation apart, no doubt of it. Families not even talking to one another. People in chat rooms casually throwing out the worst, most vulgar and tasteless things they can think of to say. Nations declaring they don't even want him to visit. Good and decent people all across the world are abhorred at his boorish behavior. Allies have decried his actions. The majority of Americans disapprove of his job performance. Many of his supporters are very mean and nasty, like they've got some kind of chip on their shoulder, just itching for a fight. We even have people openly wishing for the worst for others, even death. That is not a unified nation. Yes, ripping the nation apart.

We should now be called: "The Divided States Of America."

Hello Darth,

If we disagree on what is best for our nation, that is no reason we have to hate.

How is a divided house supposed to stand?

you got it my friend

first we need to shift out the fakes

the REAL Americans will pull together

the infestation is still afoot however

Hello evince,

I get it my bro

But

embracing lies over fact to be able to PRETEND you have not been proven wrong repeatedly is reason for publicly shaming people

they are allowed their own Opinion

They cant NOT have their OWN "facts"

There are always going to be those people. They have always existed and always will. The big change in our world has been the internet. Those people were very marginalized and unable to find an audience before the internet. But now they have a platform. Now they can voice ugly ideas and circulate them.

It is up to the good people to stand up for what is right. The internet is a huge test of our resolve to freedom of speech. If we support that concept, we must allow the hateful to share their ugly ideas. Our challenge is to rise above their level, not meet them at it. When they go low, we must go high.

Of course they will dispute facts. They kind of have to. If they agreed on the facts, then the appropriate policy is usually the liberal approach. No way the right wants to admit that, so instead of arguing correct policy, they challenge the basic facts which naturally lead directly to it.

That's why they, for instance, argue that voter fraud is a big problem. They want to create this artificial 'fact' in order to justify their policy of stringent voter restrictions. Which, of course, is the wrong policy for our nation with it's self-government that depends on the active and engaged participation of a well-informed populace. The right would rather keep people misinformed and turned off to politics, not engaged. They want the rich and powerful to rule. They don't want everybody voting. They want to suppress voter turn-out, keep active participation of a well-informed populace to a minimum. Making politics nasty, and running people off from discussions plays right into that.

You know who's style of posting I admire the most?

Oneuli. She reads all the worst vile stuff they post and then calmly goes exactly to whatever fact some right wing trash-mouth extremist has gotten wrong, simply points it out, and thus negates everything they've said. And she does it with elan. Completely sidesteps any pressure to become immersed in a flame war. It is as if she is impervious to insults. Very admirable. I'm glad she's here, glad she's doing that. I'm also glad I am different and simply won't give them the time of day. I just don't want their energy. It's too negative. I enjoy my peaceful and respectful style of posting. Very much. It's so nice. I feel like I am pampering myself, spoiled by only the highest quality of political discussion. And why not? I deserve it.

I paid my dues. I do know what I am missing. I had no Ignore list for over a decade; until I just got curious what it would be like without all the trash talk. My PIP actually began as an experiment. I didn't tell anybody. I just did it. I decided ahead of time to do it for 3 weeks, because that's how long it takes to generally change a human habit. Well, of course, the rest is history. I found out how well it works and how much nicer it is to enjoy cerebral discussions without the sandbox fights. That was when I knew I would never go back to the old way. Any doubts vanished years ago. Long ago and far away on different chat site.

We will never be rid of ugly ideas.

All we can do is stand up for what is right.

And show them that we are the majority.

Instead of shaming lies, I think we should shame ugly posting by ignoring it. Just pretend it doesn't exist! Don't acknowledge it. Marginalize the ugly voices. Make people feel OK to use a large ignore list. There's nothing wrong with that. As far as I am concerned, I am proud of my PIP. I think it is fabulous. I would love it if most posters did the same thing. What is it worth to be able to say you have nobody on your Ignore List? I'll tell you what that is worth. Nothing. It's worthless. Doesn't get you anything. And anybody who would put you down for doing so, or put you down for any reason, simply needs to be added to the list. And then all is well.

And if you are ever annoyed or hurt because of something ugly somebody else said about you, even for a moment, even if you don't openly show is or acknowledge it, then that is too high a price to pay for something that is worth exactly Nothing. I have no qualms about having a large IgList, and I am here to show every poster that there is no disgrace, no shame, in using the options available to enhance the posting experience. I am proud of having found a very workable solution to this form on online bullying. To me, using a large IgList is Smart. And because I use one, I am happy to visit here and discuss politics with anyone who wants to do exactly that. It's wonderful.

I bet if people felt more welcome to post here the site would experience a large growth in participation of people who are happy to talk about things but don't want to be in flame wars.

You are awesome

Oneuli is awesome

I love all the champions of truth here

its takes us all to win

I make it interesting for the beginning posters to find a way to get their footing on the internets debating world

I know you hate the invective but many find it entertaining ( I happen to think invective is hilarious)

the world they live in is full of it

it makes people laugh

It confuses the fake posters from other nations who seek to pretend to be Americans discussing their own nation.

Its a tool

and I love employing it

anyone here who shows me real heart and a respect for facts doesn't get it heaved at them by me except rarely

lie and trade in lies while displaying a sociopathic outlook on the value of other humans and I unleash.

it takes all kinds

and I consider myself one of a kind

as we all are

lets all Keep fighting

Its working

thanks to the founders brilliant ideas

all throughout mankinds existence liars have had to be faced down

when one gets too polite with them they USE that slack

its daily maintainance to keep them down

Hello mak2,

I think shaming might be in order.

Those who live in shame bring it on themselves.

It is not required for the rest to dwell upon it.

It is a diversion from more important discussions.

I view 'shaming' as a waste of time.

That's the part where I treat myself special. I leave that task to others. Oneuli does an excellent job. So does mak2. And midcan5. And rjhenn. And kudzu. And so many others, here and on other boards.

Thanks. I appreciate your point, but no, they should be ashamed of their behavior. And I doubt they will be on their own.

Hello Darth,

Who said anything about hate lol?

Doesn’t it strike you as odd that there was more social unrest under the ‘uniter’ Obama than there is under the supposed ‘hater’ Trump? Is it because more people are working?

What do you attribute it to?

Not so sure I agree on the social unrest thing. Charlottesville.

Hello anonymoose,

1. I was not a Trump supporter and have not voted for a repub for president since Bob Dole
2. I support about half of standard democrat positions yet because I oppose or don't care about the other half you people consider me a white supremacist neo nazi trumpster.

Who are 'you people?'

3. Because of this I do not trust you. At all.

Who?

4. Because of this you people have forced me to strongly consider voting for trump in 2020.
5. Congratulations.

Sounds to me like you are stereotyping. Judging the actions/character of an entire group of people (of your grouping) because of the actions/character of a few individuals. How inconsiderate.

But I am glad to hear you are voting. Our goal should be that every person of voting age does so in every election. If that happened our country would be a far better shape. And that effect does not have to be absolute. Simply improving voter turn-out will improve our government.

Hello and welcome Skeeter Sousley,

On to MAGAness christian soldiers.

This is a multi-religious nation. And also the home of many non-religious people. Most Christians are fake anyway. They have no unconditional love in their hearts for fellow humans. Always imposing conditions.

I do not believe that President Trump is making America great. The swamp is way worse. I don't understand how he can lie to his supporters and they just look the other way. Gonna release the taxes - never did. Not gonna play golf as President - out there all the time. Gonna pay off the federal debt - running it up instead. Gonna get Mexico to pay for a wall - now he wants to add it onto the debt.

When have I ever done that once? Maybe you've been talking to certain posters too much. Some will, some wouldn't think of it. Guno lives in N Carolina, so you know he has some venting to do. You might want to try a different forum, if the lowbrow attitudes bug you. I've learned people come to a sight like this just to vent, and will say stuff just because. I get called certain absurd things from the right around here, just like you get from the left. I don't like having to tell weirdos, that Obama is not my lord, and savior.

Hello anonymoose,

Who are 'you people?'
Lefties, democrats.

Lefties, democrats.

Sounds to me like you are stereotyping.
To a degree, yes.
Judging the actions/character of an entire group of people (of your grouping) because of the actions/character of a few individuals..
It's more than a few. And it's not just on this board.
How inconsiderate.
You're welcome.
But I am glad to hear you are voting.
I vote in every election, no matter how insignificant. In fact, the more insignificant the lower the turnout and the more my vote counts.
Our goal should be that every person of voting age does so in every election. If that happened our country would be a far better shape.
Especially if they voted their conscience , as I do, rather than for a team .

It's very tellling who Poli banned from this thread.
I understand him banning hard core righties but some of the conservatives he banned are quite reasonable. And of the lefties he only banned IQ64, deservedly, but why not, e.g., McSlawber? He's the worst of the dims on this board who accuses anybody who disagrees with him on any one topic of being a racist trumpster. He even listed mak2 as a racist trumpster, probably because mak2 may have mentioned he'd never want to live in San Diego or some other inocuous post. No, McSlawber is in the same league as IQ64 and there are others, just used him as an example.
So like I said, very telling about him who he thread banned.
To his credit he didn't ban me.
So thanks to Poli, he at least got an honest answer from a right leaning libertarian who's quite socially liberal on several issues .

The only reason anyone is thread banned is because they have been placed on my permanent IgList due to a PIP violation. My IgList is my BanList.

It has nothing to do with their politics.

As you can see, there are liberals and conservatives on my IgList. And there are more of each who are not on my IgList.

"Personal Ignore Policy PIP: I like civil discourse. I will give you all the respect in the world if you respect me. Flame on me, mouth off to me, or express overt racism, you go on my PERMANENT Ignore List. Zero tolerance. No exceptions. I won't participate in your threads, you will be banned from mine. ... Ignore the shallow. Cherish the thoughtful. Long Live Civil Discourse, Mutual Respect, and Good Debate! ps: if you like my PIP, feel free to use it. It works well."

I don't hate President Trump.

I feel sorry for him. He is so messed up he has destroyed his own life, has no happiness, and is negatively impacting that of many others.

I understand his supporters have their reasons. I simply disagree with them.

The best way to build a functional future for the USA is to put this Trump era behind us and move on.

We have to forgive President Trump and move on.

This is not to say that President Trump should not have to answer for his crimes. He should. We should not have to be troubled by lingering pain after he's gone. That's why we should forgive him in our minds. Let him and the Justice system deal with making him pay for his crimes.
