A tax break does not give people money they don't have, it lets them keep more of their own money.

Money meant for taxes to pay for things.

So it's free money.

They had to pay for it before, now they don't. So it's free.

So they're getting all the same government services, they're just not paying for any of them. So they're getting it for free.

Taxes pay for things, right?

So if you're not paying taxes, but you're still enjoying all the benefits of what those taxes fund, doesn't that mean you get all that shit for free?

No, they are paying less for those services. If they are wealthy they are in the top 50% which pays 95% of all federal income taxes.

The person who is paying for no federal services is the person who owes 0 income taxes and gets back 6,000 + in Earned income tax credit.

But that person is still contributing taxes for those services unlike the bottom 50% which owes no federal income tax and still gets back tax credits. They are paying nothing for all those services.

It is not really free money, it is borrowed money.

No, they are paying less for those services.

Not when they pay $0 in taxes like most rich people.

If they are wealthy they are in the top 50% which pays 95% of all federal income taxes.

LMAO! The top 50% is $57K and up.

You are trying to lump in someone who makes that with someone who has billions???

Talk about intellectual dishonesty and bad faith.

That's why everyone calls you Bad Faith Flash.

Wait until I tell you what Donald Trump's tax liability has been...

unlike the bottom 50% which owes no federal income tax and still gets back tax credits.

Incorrect, Flash.

Every single worker pays taxes out the door, some of them get it refunded back to them afterwards...but they're still paying those taxes on their paychecks.

Now, compare that to the wealthy who don't pay income taxes because of how their income is derived, and how it's taxed.

They are paying nothing for all those services.

Incorrect, Flash. They are paying for those services in their paychecks, and while of them get it refunded, they're still paying out the door while people like Trump are not.

unlike the bottom 50% which owes no federal income tax and still gets back tax credits.

You know, the bottom 50% would "pay" those taxes if their wages were higher.

But you oppose raising wages, so once again we have an instance of Flash proving to be the obstacle to solving the problem he's whining about.

US super-rich 'pay almost no income tax'
ProPublica says it has seen the tax returns of some of the world's richest people, including Jeff Bezos, Elon Musk and Warren Buffett.
The website alleges Amazon's Mr Bezos paid no tax in 2007 and 2011, while Tesla's Mr Musk paid nothing in 2018.

Rightys have no idea how the system works. The wealth gap is worse than it was in the Gilded Age. It is at extreme levels. And you surmise that it is the poor looting the system. You cannot see. We have been slashing taxes for the wealthy and corporations since Reagan. Trump shows he pays no taxes. How many extremely profitable corporations pay no taxes? You have it backwards because you want to believe those on top care about you. They do not. You must have read what Home Depot's owner thinks about the people. He is mainstream in the top 1 percent. You are being badly fooled . You are a problem for the people. You are being suckered by the Repubs.

Regardless of how many wealthy pay no federal income taxes, it is still true that the top 50% pay 95% and the bottom 50% only 5% of federal income taxes. So, they are paying most of the services for government. That is the way the progressive income tax is designed to work. I made some factual statements and you made some unfounded assumptions to turn it into partisan hyperbole. I said nothing about the poor looting the system or the people at the "top" caring about me. I'm not being suckered by Republicans because they are as bad as the Democrats. You are wrong about inequality being worse. Inequality is computed using income that does not include government transfer payments. When that is included inequality is much less. Expecting people to take sides pitting wealthy v. poor is simplistic hate-mongering.

Now, compare that to the wealthy who don't pay income taxes because of how their income is derived, and how it's taxed.

Yet, the upper 50% still pay almost all federal income taxes.

If people pay income taxes and get 100% of that refunded plus additional money in tax credits, they paid no federal income taxes. They paid negative taxes because they got government benefits. Just a fact. The bottom 50% would not have those benefit if it was not being paid for by the top 50%. That is the function of a progressive income tax-take from the rich and give to the poor.

Regardless of how many wealthy pay no federal income taxes, it is still true that the top 50% pay 95% and the bottom 50% only 5% of federal income taxes. ...

Is that because the Top 50% has 95% of the nation's wealth and controls who pays taxes?

How can wealthy people end up paying no taxes at all?

Is that because the Top 50% has 95% of the nation's wealth and controls who pays taxes?

It is based on income and not wealth. But if paying your "fair share" means paying the same percentage of taxes as your percentage of income, then the upper income are the only group that pays their fair share. That is just a factual description and should not be interpreted as claiming the wealthy or the poor are "better" or "victims" of the other. Nobody wants to keep others down--it is not in their interest.

What do you think the tax laws should be? Status quo? 20% flat tax, private and corporate, no deductions? Set a minimum poverty level to owe taxes?

If everyone's fair share of a road was $100/year, should that include usage? A company that drives thousands of trucks on it every week pays more than the apartment dweller using it 14 times a week?

The flat tax might not be bad. One proposal in Congress a few years ago was 17% starting at $40,000. That would essentially raise taxes on most Americans except those at the top who currently pay about 24% effective rate. Maybe raising the rate to 30% for those over $1 million. At that time the 17% was based on raising the same amount of revenue.

I think the usage thing becomes too complicated. We need to simplify. I guess toll roads already are a type of usage.

There are too many problems with the Fair Tax idea (federal sales tax).

I don't know if the flat tax should apply to corporations. Would it just be on profits or all revenue?
