BTW, the law that requires all ERs to treat emergent conditions and not turn them away for lack of insurance was passed and signed off by Saint Ronnie.

It requires hospital Emergency Departments that accept payments from Medicare to provide an appropriate medical screening examination (MSE) to anyone seeking treatment for a medical condition, regardless of citizenship, legal status, or ability to pay. Participating hospitals may not transfer or discharge patients needing emergency treatment except with the informed consent or stabilization of the patient or when their condition requires transfer to a hospital better equipped to administer the treatment."

I was lucky enough one day while still in nursing school and working PT at a local hospital to see this law work as designed. A young military couple presented to the small ER, where she was assessed as in active (really active!!!) labor, and sent upstairs to the delivery room area. They weren't from the area; they were traveling through on their way to his next base. I was instructed, as an aide, to help the husband sign in and fill out paperwork. I saw what she was doing as she was rushed by in a wheelchair to the delivery room, so told him "Hey, let's forget this paperwork for now, come with me and see your child be born!" He was all for that. I asked him if he was okay with witnessing delivery, so his young 20-something-yo self told me how he was in Iraq and saw terrible things, so he was okay with it. We went into the delivery room, where Mama was on the cusp. There was no time to give her any epi or other pain-relieving measures. I kept one eye on him and when I saw him start to crumple shoved a chair at him. He sat only briefly, to catch his wind, and then we saw their son be born. He was crying and so was I. The real hero though was Mrs. Soldier.... she gave out a few grunts and a couple of yells, and delivered a very healthy 10 lb little boy after only a couple of hours of labor, most of which happened in their car. A true soldier!

I was so impressed that no one gave them crap about their health insurance status.... everyone was focused on mom and bringing the passenger into this life.
