I wasn't there, I do not know why he was attacked, did he threaten the man with the gun? It seems we don't have all the details, so I can not honestly answer why he was attacked.

You are correct that none of us were there and so far there's been no video provided so all we have to go on is what's being reported by the police. What's being reported is the alleged thief took a log and threatened the good Samaritan. Assuming that's accurate why was he attacked? (if someone is threatening you with a gun chances are you probably aren't going to pick up a log and then attack him. that's Darwin award worthy there)

If someone is threatening you with a gun it is hard to tell what one would do, it all depends on the circumstances.

This is hypothetical because according to the report the thief threatened with a log first.

You correct that each situation has its own set of facts and circumstances but generally speaking most folks aren't going to attack someone pointing a gun at them as you are forcing them to try and shoot you.

Look to at your knee jerk reactions to Martin and Brown. You were flat out wrong. The difference between Rice and MacDonald is that they didn't commit a crime. Martin, Brown and this clown DID.
