The result was a House based on population, a Senate with equal representation and an Electoral College having the same number of members as a state's total votes in Congress. The compromise not only helped secure votes of the smaller states at the Constitutional Convention but helped secure them again in the state ratifying conventions that followed. This is basic Constitutional history not "a common belief not borne out by the evidence".
